European-style colonialism could be how humans proceed in #space exploration.

This philosopher of science and religion says “it doesn’t matter whether space is actually inhabited or whether rocks have rights. Preventing colonialism in outer space doesn’t request the space industry to agree on metaphysical questions.”

But it does require all participants to agree on a shared set of standards for caring about planets:

I recently started using #navidrome to manage my music, so naturally, I had to write my own #subsonic compatible client. Its using @kde Kirigami2 so will take a little effort to get running on #SailfishOS. github.com/piggz/supersonik

@piero The answer is "it depends..." .. and is down to whatever framework/toolkit is used. If its pure Silica, then no, that would be developed on the emulator or a real device. If it uses a toolkit abstraction, like Amazfish or Puremaps, then yes, dev can happen on desktop and then tweaked when on a SailfishOS device. If its a Qt5/KF5/QQC/Kirigami1 then yes, I we have all those libraries built for Sailfish and can develop on desktop and run on device.......
in reply to Adam Pigg

@piero .....but this app is Qt6/Kf6/Kirigami2, so no, I dont (yet) have those libs available on Sailfish, so ATM, this is desktop or some other distro that ships these libs... something with plasma mobile

#GretaThunberg :
"We are never going back to normal again because ‘normal’ was already a crisis.

What we refer to as normal is an extreme system built on the exploitation of people and the planet.

It is a system defined by colonialism, imperialism, oppression and genocide by the so-called global North to accumulate wealth that still shapes our current world order.

If economic growth is our only priority, then what we are experiencing now should be exactly what we should be expecting.”

Obtained additional 2.5TB of NVDIMMs (5x 512GB Optane Series 200, for Ice Lake Xeons (LGA-4189))... the $/GB was too good to pass on, and these are new + shipping directly from Intel (not China hyperscaler decomms).

So... now begins the arduous task of comparative analysis for CPU SKUs and MB choices. Probably it makes sense to duplicate the existing Ice Lake build, but that's not as fun as obsessing over specs and possibilities.

Microsoft Windows kernel changes don't suddenly mean big things for Linux gaming

cross-posted from: lemm.ee/post/42362729

There's a lot of blog posts and news articles being written right now centred around Microsoft's plans for updates to Windows 11, and potential kernel changes, with some thinking this means big things for Linux gaming.

Sorry to say, but I'm here to bring a more realistic take and to help keep all your feet on the ground.

quite relevant to yesterday's discussion.

in reply to RmDebArc_5

The majority of "Linux issues" is created intentionally. It's often not enough to not support Linux officially (even if there would be no additional work involved anyway) and let players figure out problems on their own. A lot of studios, publishers and developers actually go out of their way and actively invest time to block Linux.

So nothing will obviously change. Windows could run on a fully compatible Linux kernel tomorrow and games would still check for Linux to artificially create issues.

The only pure-linux issues that I have faced in the last few years are due to Wayland. And it's not an issue, it's just the legacy application has not yet embraced Wayland yet. Otherwise it has been smooth sailing for me.

Finally a good take. Or maybe I'm just a pessimist lol

Microsoft are masters at dancing around anti competitive regulation. Xbox is struggling, they've said so themselves. I think they're going to focus more on Gamepass and the Windows Store so making it as difficult as possible for the likes of the Steamdeck to succeeded is in their best interest. If they can push companies to adopt their new framework and at the same time make that framework almost impossible to implement into wine then its a win win. They can hurt wine while painting it as better security so they're isn't another CrowdStrike incident.

Anticompetitive practices disguised as user security.

I know linux isn't very popular for the general public but Apple has their own implementation of wine in development and Google has flooded schools with Chromebooks. If I was Michaelsoft, I'd want to crush the competition quickly and discreetly now before I implement my Windows subscription so people don't have any good alternatives left

A reminder about marketing.

Before you buy something like Anker’s new MagGo SD card reader to take advantage of that high-fps video capture on the iPhone 16 Pro, go read PetaPixel’s warning about product marketing and the limits of SD cards.

> PetaPixel today confirmed that the iPhone can technically shoot 4K at 30 frames per second (FPS) in ProRes Log to a UHS-II SD card, but attempting to choose a higher frame rate would guarantee dropped frames.

I hope I am wrong, but it appears almost as if it were a dry run to see whether Trump and Vance could incite civil unrest on a scale surpassing that what happened on Jan 6. Trump's even more or less overtly threatened a bloodbath if he'd not get elected (he claimed to have meant it in relation to the economy, but it was purposely ambiguous).

It's almost as if they wanted to test how quickly a vitriolic statement could lead to actual violence. I hope I err and they're just idiots.

Chuck Darwin reshared this.

Come on, NPR. Vance isn't spreading "claims" about pet-eating.

He's spreading outright, bald lies.

Just saw a news report that the Secret Service fired at a guy hiding in the bushes near/on Trump's golf course. He dropped his Ak-47 style weapon, ran and was eventually captured. Billed as an assassination attempt (but no reports so far that he managed to fire a shot). My guess for his defense: "I was merely hunting for pet dogs and cats, Your Honor, and thought that, as their protector, some might be around the former president."
in reply to Dan Gillmor

This is why I only consider NPR to be an “okay” news service. They do far too much giving benefit of the doubt sometimes. It took them a very long time to call what Trump was saying “lies”, even after the political violence started in 2020. I barely consume the news anymore because I can’t fully trust any of them to give all of the facts and clearly call out disinformation.
