The term "Mentions" on here means when you type an @ symbol and then the address of the account you want to mention. This is also known as @-ing (pronounced "at-ing").
Mentioning an account causes the account owner to get a notification about the post where they were mentioned, so they can go and see it.
There are lots of questions answered about mentions on Mastodon here:
➡️ fedi.tips/what-are-mentions-on…
If you have any other questions, let me know in the replies!
I know people don't like being 《 mentioned》 on social media. They're right. It's mostly spammy/scammy.
As a Mod, however, I will mention members who tend to break server rules.
Haven't heard mentions being blanket-condemned before.
Mentioning someone is just a basic part of social media? Mentions could be used for spam etc but so could replies?
It's a bit different in that a spammer will create a post, usually an intrusive ad or scam, and then they'll start adding dozens and dozens of usernames to that post.
These sorts of vile practices were incredibly common on Facebook. I'm not going to let that happen here, though.

#FreeBSD is great and I’m a long-term user but there’s room for improvements and time to support modern solutions without losing our identity.

When everything works for them on #Linux - then yes its hard - but many things do not work on #Linux
For example there are not 'out-of-the-box' ZFS Boot Environments on #linux anywhere - only on #FreeBSD and #Solaris/#Illumos.
As it seams its not possible to use SMART capabilities over USB on #Linux - while its possible on #FreeBSD - details here:

So just show what works less good (or does not work at all) on #Linux and show them #FreeBSD as an alternative where it works.
@vermaden comparisons never truly end well.
Linux® is no longer mentioned at the FreeBSD Foundation's page about the FreeBSD Project – <old.reddit.com/r/freebsd/comme…> for a fuller list of things that need not be mentioned there.
<freebsdfoundation.org/freebsd-…> is good.
@gyptazy I agree that the Project should be more upfront about known issues – in particular, pitfalls to getting started.
The Project's book of frequently asked questions ignores such things – compare with the five areas described as critical, by the Foundation, at <freebsdfoundation.org/blog/why…> …

Some Intel Linux Driver Maintainers Have Left The Company
With the recent Intel layoffs and early retirement / buyout packages, I have been curious to see what impact it will have on the open-source/Linux software engineers at the company. There's at least a few driver maintainers that have unfortunately departed the company but at least no major exodus of their well respected Linux software engineers...

40 minutes sessions, with 30 minute breaks.
