Two Palestinian writers on the right to share their stories
In the year since the devastating Oct. 7 attacks on Israel, tens of thousands of Palestinians have been killed. Even more have been injured or displaced. Still, many Palestinians across the diaspora feel that they aren't allowed to share their stories — that the fullness of their humanity is too often reduced to a few soundbites on the news, or images of people dying. So on this episode, we're revisiting conversations with Fady Joudah and Tariq Luthun — two Palestinian American poets who have tried to carve out space to expand the kind of stories that Palestinians are allowed to tell.

The Albanese government has today declared stronger protections for the waters around Heard Island and McDonald Islands, one of Australia’s wildest, most remote areas. The marine park surrounding the islands will be extended by 310,000 square kilometres, quadrupling its size.Announcing the decision, Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek said Heard Island and McDonald Islands – about 4,000 kilometres southwest of Perth – are a “unique and extraordinary part of our planet. We are doing everything we can to protect it.”
But the announcement, while welcome, is a missed opportunity on several fronts.
Important areas around the islands remain unprotected, despite a wealth of scientific evidence pointing to the need for safeguards. On this measure, the government could have done far more to protect this unique wildlife haven.
#ClimateDiary. Already been a wobbly few days, floods, hurricanes, wildfires and all; now I read the opening paragraph of this new article by key climate scientists and communicators, including @MichaelEMann and @rahmstorf
😢😢😢
“We are on the brink of an irreversible climate disaster. This is a global emergency beyond any doubt. Much of the very fabric of life on Earth is imperiled. We are stepping into a critical and unpredictable new phase of the climate crisis.”

These people in the #LNP must have rocks in their head ... #termination of pregnancy is a fundamental part of #WomensRights & #WomensHealth and to even to have a conversation about reversing these rights in #Queensland is a betrayal.
Labor health minister #ShannonFentiman said:
Jann Stuckey doesn’t believe him, and she knows the LNP and David Crisafulli better than anyone. And so if she doesn’t believe him, then I don’t think anyone in Queensland can believe him.
So those Queenslanders that fought hard to get voluntary assisted dying as part of our health scheme, should be really worried today. And all of those women and girls who have fought hard for years to see legal and safe and affordable access to termination of pregnancy should be really scared today.

The Australian newspaper revealed this week that Scenic Rim MP #JonKrause told a candidates’ forum that “we need to ensure that there are enough people in the parliament to be able to **#repeal** those laws or to make significant amendments”.
Guardian Australia can reveal that another MP, the retiring rightwinger #MarkRobinson, told a Christian podcast in August there “are no doubt corrections that will happen over time”.
Robinson said the LNP’s core issues – including youth crime, the cost of living, housing and health services – were “the big things the election will swing on” but in future changes could be made in line with the party’s broader platform.
“I see our values are very firmly anchored in **"family values"** ,” Robinson said.
Where do we get these reprehensible politicians?
Florida #Republican Demands #Hurricane Aid She Tried to Block
“Republican Representative Anna Paulina Luna demanded more #FEMA funding for #Florida, just weeks after she voted against a bill that provided $20 billion for federal emergency funds.
As #HurricaneMilton approaches the Florida coastline, #Luna has waded into a growing spat between Vice President #KamalaHarris and Sanctimonious #DeSantis.”
