Office Hours: Milton, Helene, Floods, Heatwaves, and Deaths — Why isn’t climate change a huge issue in the 2024 campaign? robertreich.substack.com/p/off…
in reply to Robert Reich

Climate change is a huge issue but the mainstream media refuse to take it seriously.

cross that with my realization that not having a tracking device on you, whether by choice, accident or theft, has become a disability that doesn't get much attention WRT accessibility, and the harm is even greater than the immediate material loss

Surveilling Europe’s edges: when digitalisation means dehumanisation

In May 2024, Access Now’s Caterina Rodelli travelled across Greece to meet with local civil society organisations supporting migrant people and monitoring human rights violations, and to see first-hand how and where surveillance technologies are deployed at Europe’s borders. In the first of a three-part blog series reflecting on what she saw, Caterina explains how, all too often, digitalising borders dehumanises the people trying to cross them.

The post Surveilling Europe’s edges: when digitalisation means dehumanisation appeared first on European Digital Rights (EDRi).

Did someone just say "composable concurrency"?

Why yes, @dicejw just posted an [RFC] for implementing the anticipated component-model async design in Wasmtime, wasm-tools, wit-bindgen!

‘Nederlands beste universiteit’ TU Delft kukelt uit top-50 wereldranglijst, maar zijn ze écht slechter? ad.nl/delft/nederlands-beste-u…

Goed om te zien dat het #AD ruimte biedt voor een kritisch perspectief op de #THE World University Rankings.

En mooi dat #UNL duidelijk stelling neemt: "Universiteitsranglijsten die de prestaties van universiteiten in één enkel getal willen vatten, doen geen recht aan al het belangrijke werk op universiteiten"

The United States spent at least $22.76 billion funding Israel’s military operations in the year following the Oct. 7 attacks, a new analysis from Brown University has found. And that’s a conservative estimate.

In a new 'Vibe Check,' Kat Abughazaleh counts the ways the US could have spent its money, rather than fueling the destruction of Gaza.

“$22 billion is a lot of money and it’s coming from your pocket.” Abughazaleh notes.

U.N. officials voiced concern on Tuesday that the same methods of warfare used by Israel that caused high civilian casualties and widespread destruction in Gaza are now being repeated in Lebanon, calling for action to avoid the same "spiral of doom".

Israeli forces have begun ground operations in the southwest of Lebanon, escalating a year-long conflict with the Iran-backed group Hezbollah that has killed over 1,000 people in the past two weeks.

Story of the Week is about Hurricane Helene, centering on revising tropical storm threat communications to account for bulging inland deluges. Little did we realize that three days later we'd be looking at --another-- warming-juiced monster storm barreling in. But here's Milton.

Sincerely: best luck to Florida. Let's --all-- remember: our best luck is made, not found.

I've actually been using it for nearly a year! It sure helps to have a persistent notification that makes me aware that I've been using the phone for a little too long

Only problem I had with it is that one day it changed from going back to 0 minutes at midday instead of midnight and it has stayed that way for half a year. But it's still 24 hours, so no big deal
