Matt Mullenweg: ‘WordPress.org just belongs to me’
theverge.com/2024/10/4/2426223…
The lines between the WordPress open-source project, the nonprofit backing it, and the commercial arm owned by Automattic are blurring.
"WordPress is open-source and free to use, with no mandate to give back."
#Emma Roth, 2024
Hey Emma, you might want to learn what "GNU GPL" and "copyleft" mean if you're going to report on this stuff. There is an obligation to give back, if any modified version of WordPress is "distributed", in either source code or binary form. Full source code must be made available under the same libre license terms.
WP really ought to be AGPL though ...
Given this lack of research or attention to detail, the angle of the rest of the article is suspect. There certainly seems to be a SillyCon Valley business press consensus that Matt is the villain of the piece. That in itself makes me inclined to take his side against the *private equity* company running WP Engine until convinced otherwise.
Matt's leadership has given the world a CMS that half the web runs on. What has WP Engine given the world?

Here are two very good reasons to buy things from our online gift shop:
1. All proceeds go directly to supporting the Vagina Museum's work, in our physical premises and on here.
2. You get to own cool stuff that you definitely can't get anywhere else.

If anyone wants to take a stab at getting a non-booting DEC Alpha Personal Workstation 600au to work... This is actually not a bad deal. Doesn't come with the RAM, but it takes standard RAM so easy to get.

in reply to Ross Mounce • • •Huge respect also to the University of Gondar (Ethiopia). Over 91% of the research it produced (2019-2022) is open access. OA isn't just something only wealthy institutions can do.

in reply to Ross Mounce • • •It also paints an interesting picture of German universities... you have to scroll a long-way down to find any(!)
University of Konstanz appearing 'top' of German institutions with only 82.7% open access (2019-2022), ranking 120th globally for %OA.

in reply to Ross Mounce • • •Also a clear & interesting picture down at the bottom of the institutional rankings (of %OA, 2019-2022)
2 Iranian institutions
1 Chinese institutions
and scores of Indian institutions.
What can be done to boost awareness & implementation of green open access in India, I wonder?

in reply to Ross Mounce • • •India still does not have a nationwide OA policy/mandate, which would be helpful for the implementation of Green OA.
But it seems they have a different focus - there was a proposal to the government of the “One nation, One subscription” model of centrally negotiated agreements with publishers...
