The director of the besieged Kamal Adwan hospital in Gaza is refusing Israeli orders to shut the hospital down and evacuate.

The Kamal Adwan Hospital is one of three hospitals in northern Gaza, that received evacuation orders on Tuesday by the Israeli military to clear out all their staff and patients within 24 hours, threatening that if they didn’t, they would face “the same fate as al-Shifa hospital, with destruction, killing and arrest.”

To repeat: There is a "user style" which removes the stripey poles from CWs in Mastodon 4.3, which you can install by for example installing the Stylus browser extension and going to this page:

userstyles.world/style/18496/m…

With this "user style", CWs look like this:

in reply to mcc

However, I think it is really bad I have to use a browser extension to be able to use Mastodon in a basic way. "Attention grabbing" UI elements are a real inhibitor to using a site for me and the CW bars are WAY too attention grabbing :(
in reply to mcc

I feel like if anything, content warning posts should be de-emphasised, not emphasised
in reply to mcc

the thing theyre imitating are meant to be attention grabbing to prevent accidents; its super counterproductive to use that in the mastodon UI given the actual purpose of them here
in reply to mcc

and especially focusing attention on things that the user probably does not want to read/engage with just doesn't seem like a good idea
in reply to mcc

Update: It has now been explained to me by @wgahnagl that the "user style" above can be pasted by an instance admin into the "custom CSS" box ( screenshots from: librepunk.club/@wgahnagl/11327… ) to have it apply to the entire instance.

I have also just learned of, uh, this alternative: mastodon.ie/@davey_cakes/11327…

And this interesting radically different approach in "Tangerine", which has the nice property of implicitly communicating to new users what a "content warning" is: nileane.fr/@nileane/1118177683…

Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu has threatened Lebanon with “destruction and suffering” akin to that experienced by Palestinians in Gaza if the Lebanese people do not “free” themselves from Hezbollah.

The ominous warning is interpreted widely as a threat to carry out a second genocide and stoke civil war in the already besieged nation.

Israel is currently under investigation by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for genocide in Gaza.

I was going to propose a gentler alternative to the yelly barber pole yellow stripes on CWs in 4.3, but then I prototyped my alternative and… uh, I don't actually like it either.
in reply to Clairement crevée

and Tangerine as a whole has things you might not be happy about (margins and left-indented content) but it's really good and consistent overall!
in reply to Clairement crevée

@Claire I do prefer indented content to left-indented content. But at this exact moment, it is more important to me that the margins be consistent than whether they are avatar-indented or left-indented.

(Also, I am now using basic mastodon in left-indented mode because the grouped notifications changes broke the "3.x style" userstyle I was previously using, so Tangerine would not be a step down for me in that sense.)

Some job news to share!

I feel really lucky to be stepping into this (remote-friendly) role, which will let me both return to my roots in libraries and carry forward the work around advancing #OpenScience that I've so enjoyed doing over the past three years at @PLOS.

New Nintendo hardware has just been revealed!

youtube.com/watch?v=dMqWTkgDt6…

...it's... an alarm clock. ⏰

This isn't some third party thing with a Nintendo badge slapped on it, it seems to be an actual Nintendo-developed product. It's possibly the secret "quality of life" Nintendo project that was rumoured in the 2010s.

Whether they're successes or failures, Nintendo's products are always at least interesting and fun. They're always unexpected rather than being a clone of something someone else just did.
