What does it even mean to rebuild, when next year, another extreme weather event will pile on another round of damage? The assertions of mainstream economists, like Nordhaus, assured the world that climate change would inflict marginal consequences on the global economy, even though climatologists knew this as false.

We have the results. The 2nd law of thermodynamics has prevailed, and human populations all over the world have lost out

Kind of captivated by the sample text block in this sample code. The quick brown fox sentence doesn't serve a function if you translate it! The pointlessness speaks to me github.com/preiter93/edtui/blo…
in reply to mcc

I don't speak Esperanto, but at least "eĥoj ŝanĝas ĉiun ĵaŭdon" (echoes change every Thursday?) has all the special characters (in lower case).
in reply to mcc

Sometimes the distance between a literal translation and one that captures the intended meaning can be quite large.

UPDATE: I will stop using Linux / PC for 10 months. What do you think will happen in that period?

Not only does ChatGPT introduce search (you have to pay to see how reliable it is) but also a *Chrome* plug-in to change the default search to ChatGPT. War.

I would recommend you ask on the FreeBSD forums you posted here referencing this issue as a similar one you’re facing. I think the steps will be about the same. Also don’t let them swear at you for trying things. Linux users can just be awful. #linux

Good luck!

Oh, neat! A new open source app for Fuji cameras.

Currently Android and WiFi only, just supporting transfers so far. Bluetooth is planned, as is location support. Desktop and iOS versions are listed on the roadmap.

An interesting report by Army TV about the 155-mm howitzer FH70, which is in service with the Defense Forces of Ukraine.

This howitzer is distinguished by its own engine and chassis, which allows it to move independently on the battlefield. A tractor is used for transportation over long distances, but the FH70 can quickly take up a firing position, significantly increasing its combat effectiveness.

According to their discord it's gone with no backups for the he Lemmy side at least.

I don't think there are any fiction/literature instances left, they have all folded now?

The "cargo run --example" feature is one of the best things about Rust and simultaneously one of the worst things about Rust because it means examples are very hard to separate from their source repositories. It's not uncommon for me to copypaste an example file out of an examples/ directory only to find it doesn't build in a new blank project because some very specific, undocumented nonsense out of Cargo.lock is needed to make the darn thing work
in reply to mcc

I really do wish every language had a "yes this code is in the same repository, but treat it like an unrelated library so I can demonstrate X works for my users".

E.g. it's easy to leak unusable things in Go because the `./internal/` folder is accessible to the module but not anyone else.
(You can explicitly handle this by making another go.mod in an example folder, but basically nobody does that because it's a huge pain to set up and maintain)

in reply to groxx

@groxx you can do this elegantly in Rust if you use workspaces, I think. But refactoring your project for workspaces is a heavyweight task so most people won't do it just for examples.

An Israeli corvette passes through the Suez Canal.

It is not known when this video was filmed, but it has only now gone viral in the Arab media. What was impossible 50 years ago is now commonplace, as are the constant contacts and coordination between the Israeli and Egyptian militaries.

in reply to Aure Free Press

Egypt does not want war with America. It does not want to see happen to itself what Israel and the USA have done to Gaza.

Egypt and Isreal are not pals whose militaries are hugging on another. Israel would love to force into Egypt the two million or so Gazans it aims to wipe out or expel. Egypt, quite understandably, would like to see Israel resolve its indigenous peoples conflict without such extreme and illegal upheaval.

The world awaits an outcome.

why is a ship passing through the Suez canal of any particular interest to anyone?

Really disappointed with the amount of errors in this video by fireship: youtube.com/watch?v=Iq_r7IcNmU…

- Gandhi bug never happened
- Media attention to y2k is what avoided it
- 100 people died in the northeast blackout, not 0
- the chase 'infinite money glitch' is not a glitch, its an abuse of an intentional goodwill policy
- Aircraft is probably *not* running cpp
- MCAS does not prevent stalling, its job is to emulate a different plane
- NASA didn't use imperial, they used us customary
