Made a new release of #OpenCrystalCaves - this lets you play the "first" level from start to finish!
congusbongus.itch.io/opencryst…
Future releases will add more levels and mechanics, so stay tuned! Also I spent the past couple of hours wrangling CMake so I'm going to go offline for the rest of the day for mental health

What does it even mean to rebuild, when next year, another extreme weather event will pile on another round of damage? The assertions of mainstream economists, like Nordhaus, assured the world that climate change would inflict marginal consequences on the global economy, even though climatologists knew this as false.
We have the results. The 2nd law of thermodynamics has prevailed, and human populations all over the world have lost out

Oh, neat! A new open source app for Fuji cameras.
Currently Android and WiFi only, just supporting transfers so far. Bluetooth is planned, as is location support. Desktop and iOS versions are listed on the roadmap.

An interesting report by Army TV about the 155-mm howitzer FH70, which is in service with the Defense Forces of Ukraine.
This howitzer is distinguished by its own engine and chassis, which allows it to move independently on the battlefield. A tractor is used for transportation over long distances, but the FH70 can quickly take up a firing position, significantly increasing its combat effectiveness.

The whole project seems down

There were a few fantasy communities there such as !fantasy@sffa.community , sad to see them go
like this
According to their discord it's gone with no backups for the he Lemmy side at least.
I don't think there are any fiction/literature instances left, they have all folded now?

in reply to mcc • • •yes, that would be ideal and no doubt lead to a more interesting and artful answer that celebrates the true craft that is translation
But as far as questions i am capable of solving myself, I’ll have to make to do with the constrained version.

in reply to mcc • • •yeah I was thinking that, were I to follow this particular thread, I’d use a locally hosted machine translation library because google translate api isn’t free at the type of numbers I’m guessing the kind of algorithm I’d need to write would use. As a result I could then specify “in version X of Translation Library Y”
I also can’t translate every language, nor do I know anyone who can but it’s out there for those with the facility.
Although I suspect the arguments between a group of translators’ on “reasonable” might make google seem rather stable by comparison. Considering the… spirited and passionate discourse I see when researching various translations of texts i see when I am in the neighbourhood

in reply to Leon • • •@leon this is sounding more feasible, esp because with a fixed translation engine you could find the meta pangram by machine search.
Might be worth trying. If you could find even a single dyad of languages that produce such a pangram even that would be an interesting discovery.

Now it happens earlier that I posted a photo of my new exemplar copy of Thousand Character Classic, which is a poem of exactly one thousand distinct characters used once each in a sort of run-on ramble from a teacher addressed to a student, but functional literacy is pegged at 3000 and college educated people know more like 5000+
mcc
in reply to abadidea • • •@0xabad1dea wait, here's a thought. what if we relax the problem. what would be the shortest chinese text that could include all the *radicals* (or all "reasonable" radicals?), without concern to where they appear?
this might work better in traditional chinese than simplified
abadidea
in reply to mcc • • •I can’t think of any characters that formally have a different radical in simplified (the way the radical is written may be different but it’s just a surface presentation)
There’s something like 214 radicals in the modern list that merges very similar ones so that’s still a hell of a run-on sentence. I suppose you could reduce it a bit if you’re willing to count appearances of a radical in the non-radical (“moderate”?) portion of a character so you could count some characters as representing two or three radicals at once
mcc
in reply to abadidea • • •@0xabad1dea okay, cool, different forms are okay as long as a fluent reader would look and go "that's this specific radical it's just wrote different".
I think for purposes of this exercise it's not important for it to be a sentence (we require a sentence in other languages but those languages are different). In place of the sentence restriction, we could introduce a restriction the string/poem could be as short as possible or close to it.

Weird that not only is Hebrew in there twice but one of them says Hebrew in both English and Hebrew, but no other language does that (though Greek is named exclusively in English instead of Greek)
Ahhh this thing is so inconsistent
