Re: last boost

Once again, the Astro Docs maintainers being a true model for and positive force in open-source community building.

This tool started from our relentless commitment to give co-author credit to EVERYONE involved in a PR (via tedious manual process) because only code commits "count" on GitHub.

Our maintainers built first a web app, and now a browser extension to include your non-code committing participants with the press of a button.

Good luck for that.

mastodon.online/@mastodonmigra… mastodonmigration@mastodon.online - Trump is Deadcatting Again

We really need to call out the politic strategy Trump has deployed these last few days.

What he's doing is called a "dead cat strategy" or "deadcatting".

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_cat…

When things get really bad; the debate, Taylor Swift, and now the Madison Square Garden garbage fiasco, the strategy is to do anything to change the subject; eating cats, death threats, oral sex simulation. All of this crazy stuff is actually 'deadcatting'.

#GrapheneOS doesn't come with text-to-speech enabled or set up by default.

github.com/espeak-ng/espeak-ng is not compatible with the current Android versions and github.com/RHVoice/RHVoice doesn't have support for #German.

Any recommendation for me? FOSS preferred. 🤔

in reply to chewy

Make sure you download the correct architecture

armeabi-v7a = 32bit

arm64-v8a = 64 bit

3. open the app and download the German language pack

4. select via the settings that GrapheneOS should use this app for the voice output

5. so that no data is sent to Google, the app can be completely denied Internet access in the network settings.

The voice output should now work without a connection to Google

apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/g…

in reply to chewy

@chewy I don't know what exactly you mean with "open the app". I've opened the tts setting in the OS preferences and selected German.

Following your directions exactly also led to the same error while trying to select German in step 3: paste.debian.net/1334405/

in reply to Karl Voit

I think you have a Pixel 8. Did you choose the 64 bit version of APK Mirror? And deleted the previously installed version of the voice output? By “open the app” I don't mean the app itself, but the voice output of GrapheneOS.

Settings --> Accessibility --> Voice output --> Preferred module --> Google voice output

Tap on the gear wheel and select Install voice data --> Select German

in reply to chewy

@chewy Yes to the 64bit version. Yes to uninstalling the Play APK beforehand.

Interesting: I've got no "Voice output" in the Accessibility menu. Can you show me a screenshot from the page before "Sprachausgabe"?

in reply to chewy

@chewy Perfect. Yes, that is called "Text-to-speech output" in English and this is the thing I was using to download the "Language". When I select "German", the screen closes and I'm back in the "Accessibility" menu.

When I do that a second time, I get the "Settings keeps stopping" dialog with "App info", "Close app" and "Show details". The last one shows the stacktrace I published earlier.

So with my GrapheneOS (latest stable) on Pixel 8, this method does not seem to work.

in reply to Karl Voit

I'm sorry to hear that.

Unfortunately, I have no further ideas.

After some research I found the following, maybe that will help you

giga.de/tech/grapheneos-instal…

in reply to chewy

@chewy Now I purged the Play Store version again and installed the APK by manually downloading huggingface.co/csukuangfj/sher…

The dialog in the TTS now looks different: there's only the default and "German" for selection. On selecting German, the app crashes again with the same error. 🤷

in reply to Karl Voit

restart your phone so that all settings are applied correctly
in reply to chewy

@chewy Good idea but didn't help either.

Set language to German. Reboot. Checked language which was in it's default again. Changing still results in crashing.

in reply to Karl Voit

I'm sorry, I don't have any more solutions.

Maybe you should post your stacktrace in a GrapheneOS forum to be able to analyze the problem more precisely.

Easy to get in. But can you get out again. For me it's not really anything #Bluesky itself is/isn't doing...but what's gone before. People have poured their time and content for free into other platforms then been stung by policy/service changes. 1/2

A lot of this just isn’t true.

Bluesky has no lock-in. People are running their own data hosts right now. It’s actually very easy to leave Bluesky’s infrastructure because, unlike Mastodon, you actually own all of your posts and can take them with you. Tons of people already have. This post gets most things about Bluesky wrong.

in reply to Mike Beasley

@MikeBeas you have foundationally mistaken the point of this, which is not taking your pus with you but rather maintaining contact with your audience. All of my posts have permalinks on the server I control. The reason I continue to use services that I don't like anymore is because that's where my readers are.

Well, partial success - I did actually get heard through the space station and relayed back down to Earth.

The down side here is I didn't hear anything on this pass, possibly due to atmospheric conditions. I did hear the ISS beacon one pass back, so I can confirm send/receive through the kernel AX.25 stack does work, I just don't see to be able to it on a single orbital pass of the station.

I’m curious: _did_ the Ukrainians destroy 10.000 Russian soldiers, 100 planes, and 300 tanks quickly? I remember being surprised (and delighted) by the Ukrainian resilience early on, but I have no idea what the actual numbers were.
in reply to geo21481

I was also wondering but I think Sikorsky didn’t mean these numbers to be taken literally - it was about delivering evidence of fierce resistance quickly. Which Ukrainian army delivered in excess, with hundreds of photos of destroyed and burning Russian columns, in which the latter have also helped a lot by rather brainless command.

This photo was published in every single media out there, I just took the first copy I found online.

Its a photo of a US artillery firing range practice, from 2001 - I was in the media core and took this photo.

The photo was picked up by every clandestine NGO to sell different humanitarian aids ever since.

Look it up!

in reply to FourOh-LLC

@FourOh-LLC

Sorry, but this is nonsense. This street was in Bucha with Russian wrecked vehicles was famous and featured in many photos and videos, e.g. here:

youtube.com/watch?v=cZXWGn1akE…

@geo21481

in reply to kravietz 🦇

Of course it is, I was lying about the photo. But you get the point I hope, nobody is able to "verify" anything whatever BBC claims about a bunch of destroyed military gear.

During operation Barbarossa the Nazis inflicted damages that would have collapsed any other defending army. Since the French invasion by Napoleon it is well known how the was Russian plains and the weather is part of all Russian military operations. As recently as in Desert Storm it was re-confirmed that any supply chain extending over 300 - 500 miles is in danger of collapsing, which is part of all Russian military operations.

I do not need to see photos to know the chances of Ukraine against Russia. Some photos of destroyed military assets have little or no effect on the strategy Russia has been using for centuries to conduct warfare on or near their Motherland.

in reply to FourOh-LLC

@FourOh-LLC

But this time it’s Russia who is invading, not defending. Whatever geographic or climatic obstacles the French or Germans faced during their invasions, Putin is now facing himself.

@geo21481

in reply to kravietz 🦇

Ukraine is slightly smaller than the state of Texas, with a total area of 233,062 square miles (603,628 square kilometers).

Its within a few hops for a 400 miles supply chain.

in reply to kravietz 🦇

And by the way, did you hear and read Trump calling the Cheney's warmongering monsters? Did you read and hear Putin preferring Harris to win the POTUS race?

Now, that's real news you can trust - if you can read and you learned to listen.
