KDE's New Distro: Btrfs-Based, Immutable Linux OS, with Flatpak and Snap
Ready to be surprised? KDE Linux, a new Arch-based immutable OS featuring Btrfs, Flatpak, and Snap, made by KDE's devs, is now in development.Bobby Borisov (Linuxiac)
"Four futures for cognitive labor."
"First: the printing press. If you were an author in 1400, the largest value-add you brought was your handwriting." "With hindsight we see that even as all the terrifying extrapolations of printing automation materialized, the income, influence, and number of authors soared."
"Second: the mechanization of farming." "The per-capita incomes of farmers have doubled several times over but there are many fewer farmers, even in absolute numbers."
"Third: computers. Specifically, the shift from the job title of computer to the name of the machine that replaced it. " "This industry was replaced by a new industry of people who programmed the automation of the previous one."
"Finally: the ice trade. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, before small ice machines were common, harvesting and shipping ice around the world was a large industry employing hundreds of thousands of workers." "By WW2 the industry had collapsed and been replaced by home refrigeration."

#BestLinuxFor first time computer users?
I'm going to get a lot of flak, but I'm going for Zorin OS Core. It looks very clean and leans heavely on GNOME plus some tweaks here and there.
I get people like Linux Mint, but I don't think new users who are seeing a physical keyboard for the first time are going to instantly grasp Cinnamon, but hey, it's my second alternative.

ttech, your scripts have been invaluable to me learning this stuff and I sincerely thank you for everything in this journey. You have been amazing for the #selfhosting community and I wish you the best.
Thanks for all the fish. May your legacy live forever on.

in reply to Wayne Radinsky (old account) • • •The question of AI is fairly straightforward. What kind of AI are we talking about? The AIs available to us are generative AIs, which are by nature statistical. They will produce what is statistically in the majority, and therefore what is accepted by the majority. at the moment, they will say that a man can be pregnant, and that female penises exist. In 50 years' time, they'll be saying the opposite (if a nuclear winter hasn't annihilated us, and maybe we deserve it).
Since a large part of the population CAN'T/wON'T hear anything other than the propaganda spewed out by the mainstream media, these AIs will be a great success. People will hear what they want to hear, because any divergent speech will necessarily be “hate” speech (and therefore false by the very nature of its divergence) if it hasn't already become speech prohibited by law. Search engine results have already been “cleaned up”, and the police, the justice system and the media already obey certain lobbies. AI will be just another stone in the distopia we are living through. The AI is neit

AI will be just another stone in the distopia we are living through. The AI is neither better nor worse than what a human being writes, it's a parrot trained to choose what it's going to repeat.
AI is the mirror of our collective intelligence, which has decided that facts are not reality but a vision of the world that can be contradicted. if we construct our reality (and do NOT want to confront the reality of simple facts) we are already living in a matrix, and AI will be just one more tool to reinforce it. in 1935, german children really overwhelmingly believed that jews were a sub-race, in 2024, it's jewish children who really overwhelmingly believe that palestinians are human animals, all terrorists. Facts are no longer reality, but hate speech. The IA will be just another stone in this garden, neither better nor worse.
There's an excellent interview (in French) on the subject of AI. I don't have the subtitles, but just as I can follow a video in English, you should be able to follow a video in French.

in reply to Wayne Radinsky (old account) • • •about code quality. As systems become more and more complex, it has become impossible for human intelligence, which can't think in 4 dimensions, to program efficiently, taking advantage of the full potential of the hardware. How do you design a program that can be processed by 16 different processors, optimizing calculation times and information-sharing waiting times between processes, each of which has to wait for the other to finish before obtaining the information it needs to continue?
For the moment, the compiler does a small part of this work, but we're still in our infancy. Maybe in a few generations, some human brains will have evolved in this direction... But as ai is “generative”, its power means it can work at high speed. It can do 10,000 trials while we're writing our first line of code. It doesn't write “better” code, it writes “faster” code.
