Keep a cow?
U need a barn and U have to feed it and milk it 6 in the morning and then later in the afternoon. U would not have much life outside of taking care of that 1 cow.
I have worked diary farms with 500 heads and as small as 25 heads. That was among the best times of my life though. I bicycled to work one summer. Started 6 in the morning, had brunch after the first milking round.

What I meant is that it is no such thing as having only one cow. It is possible but there are a lot more to it. It is not like having a cat or even a dog. And U will never take a vacation. It is a 7 days a week commitment. Unless U hire someone to do the work for U.
At which point it seems better to buy the milk from an actual farmer who have chosen that life. and who is producing in abundance,.

in reply to EvolLove • • •I grew up in a different reality, where the farmers had 2-4 cows, life was less motorized and they used the cows to pull carts. When you were working the animals they did not produce milk, but most day they were just grassing and milked twice a day. The owners had the fields to harvest hay, and store it. They had the silos to collect the bedding, and spread them over the fields in the spring.
Again, it was a different reality, with many small farm owners.

I often think about the Amish
I am heavily restoring and remodeling an old barn now. It is small but it is something about it that i really like.
I am preserving the western gable. It has just over 12 inch wide pinewood planks.
My goal is to make everything as simple as possible to get a really old look.
Other carpenters probably think I am crazy but I really want that old look.
Ill put up some pictures when it is less messy.

I'll leave lumber buildings to the Amish.
