Dark-Eyed Junco in the Grass

This is a dark-eyed junco (Junco hyemalis) kind of sort of under my backyard shed. I see them in the fall and winter, but people who live up north tell me that they are a welcome sight in the spring as it means warmer weather is coming.

I'm using my Jedi mind powers to compel you to visit my photo gallery at:

The Dark Eyed Juncos that visit our garden will forever be known as Oregon Juncos.

@mediocratese

Junco hyemalis oreganus or Oregon Dark Eyed Junco is a subspecies.

"Oregon dark-eyed juncos are also less commonly known as brown-backed dark-eyed juncos. This is the most common subspecies group in the West, breeding in the Pacific Coast Ranges from southeastern Alaska to extreme northern Baja California and wintering to the Great Plains and northern Sonora. An unresolved debate exists as to whether this large and distinct subspecies group is actually a separate species" - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark-eye…

Life in the besieged Gaza Strip remains dire, with soaring costs rendering essentials unaffordable for many. Amidst a devastating humanitarian crisis, Palestinians have turned to repairing torn banknotes as merchants refuse damaged currency.

With no banks or new cash in circulation, residents are finding innovative ways to make their limited funds usable, yet even basic goods remain out of reach.

Hrmm, after doing some quick tests with my #adventOfCode solve, I'm now wondering if the #python `all()` function stops once it encounters a `False` value instead of processing all of the values in the provided iterator. Would make a ton of sense and I'm not seeing any performance differences when removing the `all()` function and putting it in a `for` loop and breaking when I encounter a `False` result. #programming

@mborus I've only got the nested list comprehensions in the input data parsing because I'm gonna need that data at least twice. Managed to avoid it everywhere else. Definitely been there more than a few times...so very, very easy...

```python
def *process_input*(self) -> list[list[int]]:
*return* [[int(j) *for* j *in* i.split()] *for* i *in* self.input_file.open('r')]
```

Type hints in AoC - nice.

I'm optimizing for maximum laziness while playing AoC, so I ended up with this evaluator.

And yes, the list around zip is not necessary and I should have not used lists, but one of the AoC goals for me is to stop optimizing the code as soon as I pass the test. (which is hard to let go of)

in reply to mborus

@mborus I still optimize, but I'll post my initial solve without optimizations to my `advent-of-code` repo, then push any optimizations I make so people can see what I changed. I also have a README.md file for each day with my thoughts on what I did and why I did it just in case it's of any help...plus I really like tinkering.

I ended up using `combinations` from `itertools` because I remembered it existed and the lazy was very, very real for day 2.

in reply to mborus

@mborus Also, I try to always have type hints. It makes it more readable for me, but I do know that for some it can definitely clutter stuff up.
in reply to Jason Weatherly

I use & like type hints for my real work or code that I plan to look at again.

For AoC I have a "lessons learned" file where I write down what I learned, but the code stays as it is.

I also enjoy looking at other people's code when I'm done. @hamatti does a great blog on that, I can recommend taking a look after you're done for the day.

in reply to mborus

@mborus @hamatti Ooooh, definitely will check him out! Also, 100% understand...mostly because I might still be tweaking my stuff because it's been a very slow day at work...lol

Sony just released the first 8 minutes of Kraven the Hunter
The studio hopes to bolster its Spider-Man Universe with much-delayed film starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson

Hoping it doesn’t suck but expecting it to. Open to expectations being wrong.

Wow, they must really be confident in their film...
@AfterHateFr, on Saturday 14th I think you can judge the movie based on those 8 minutes. 🙏😊

I just finished reading The Soul of an Octopus by Sy Montgomery and she relates that octopuses also display a sense of humor! Crows and ravens do too and parrots play tricks on their humans all the time. We humans need to stop thinking of animals as "other" and realize that we're all pretty much alike no matter what species we are.

@isotope239 one of my fave vids is of a lion roaring because he knows a human with a camera is nearby, and then smirking when the human jumps at the sound.

The only way this is justice is if he also pardons everyone else's son or daughter convicted of the same or lesser crimes. Pot convictions are a no brainer. Sure it's his son and he feels bad. Now include everyone else's kids.

Otherwise he's just another rich, privileged oligarch. Laws for thee, not for me.

If my son were in the crosshairs of the like of Trump and Kash Patel; I'd get the kid out of the country to someplace without an extradition treaty! Toute suite!

"Mused"? Really, #BrokenPost? No, he threatened. He is threatening you. No amount of your owner's kissing of Trump's orange butt will protect you and other journalists. Take this seriously. Treat it seriously. #HeadlinesMatter
in reply to Jeff Jarvis

Another day, another #BrokenPost "musing" headline. No. To muse is to "say to oneself in a thoughtful manner." They are not thoughtful. They are reckless. Get a thesaurus, people.
in reply to Jeff Jarvis

The Post is completely gone. Those two can muse or consider or even advocate. But they hold no power to do ANYTHING. Nada. Zilch. Much less pass the laws needed to rescind DST.

This is going to be a stupid, stupid time to be alive.
