Short sleepers cruise by on four to six hours a night and don’t seem to suffer ill effects. Turns out they’re genetically built to require less sleep than the rest of us.

Victims of forced sterilization in California prisons often weren’t given a choice, says Jennifer James, who works with these women. β€œThey were told they had cancer but they didn’t have cancer, and they were told the only option was a hysterectomy.” boltsmag.org/forced-sterilizat…

$35K compensation/reparations to victims seems insultingly low. And then to deny 80% of the applications. Insult to injury

Okay, having read Google's proposed remedies in its antitrust case, they seem to me deeply unserious. For one thing, it completely bypasses the concept of user choice in favor of manufacturer or vendor choice. For another, "multiple defaults" is a meaningless notion. If The Goog comes as a default, so it will remain.

Toxic flame retardants could face sweeping EU ban.

A class of substances intended to stop plastics catching fire and used in anything from smartphones to sofas could be the next family of chemicals subject to blanket restrictions in the EU amid fears over their health and environmental impact. #ClimateChange #ClimateCrisis #GlobalWarming

The Ghosts in the Machine: Spotify’s plot against musicians

<- harpers.org/archive/2025/01/th…

I use Music for Programming or DI:FM for background ambient focus enhancement. TIL some people use Spotify for this, and it's bad for artists. Suggestion: don't?

in reply to Liam Proven

I always wonder if the death of #LastFM (the streaming and social networking service - what's left is more of a warmed-over #Audioscrobbler with YouTube and Spotify integration) was because #Spotify were undercutting them. Last.fm seemed to make strenuous efforts to appease record labels and to pay for music, but Spotify always seemed to be able to minimise its payments to labels and artists.

Musk holds no elected position, nor will he in the Trump administration.

His commentary regarding Congress' funding of the government is the opinion of one man, one who could use his vast wealth to primary our representatives.

He must think that his wealth amplifies his voice louder than the law, and thus he should rule as royalty, impetuously commanding, with the expectation of capitulation by the elected.

Congress must not cave to him. The US has no kings.

Move to Amend:
End Corporate Rule.
Legalize Democracy.

On January 21, 2010, with its ruling in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission,
the Supreme Court ruled that corporations are persons,
entitled by the U.S. Constitution to buy elections and run our government.
Human beings are people; corporations are legal fictions.

We, the People of the United States of America,
reject the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in Citizens United and other related cases,
and move to amend our Constitution to firmly establish that money is not speech,
and that human beings, not corporations, are persons entitled to constitutional rights.

The Supreme Court is misguided in principle, and wrong on the law.
In a democracy, the people rule.
