Today in Labor History December 21, 1907: The Santa María School massacre occurred in Iquique, Chile. The Chilean Army attacked striking saltpeter miners and their wives and children, killing over 2,000 and destroying the strike. It also effectively quashed the union movement for the next decade. The saltpeter strike was part of a wave of strikes that started in 1905, including a General Strike earlier in December, 1907. The event is depicted in Volodia Teitelboim’s 1952 novel, “Hijo de salitre.”

Spotify is a creepy, and grossly unethical, platform at this point. it rips off musicians and rewards huge companies -- and itself. Apparently what it's doing is legal, however.

This is great reporting, from a new book by Liz Pelly. A compelling read.

This explains what has been happening to my long-time favorite playlist "coffee beats" For at least the last 2+ years, I have listened less and less to it. I felt something was wrong with it. Many artists added to the list have no web presence, or something that looks AI generated and their songs are very generic. I checked the playlist after reading the article and it looks like this is 100% fake artists now. If any one knows a similar playlist with real music, please let me know.

If more people understand through this, good. Personally I ditched Spotify for Bandcamp years ago once I understood the exploitation, plus I stream radio and YouTube for more new music, or actually visit an artist site. To everyone who has also known about Spotify, as Yoda might’ve said, “information you had. Choices you had.” #payartists

"Cuisine des terroirs" sur Arte fait un saut au Maroc dans un village paumé du centre du royaume qui cultive l'Arganier pour en faire de l'huile d'argan. On suit le quotidien d'Halima, qui dirige une coopérative de femmes qui cultivent et extraient cette précieuse matière. Elle a renoncé à une vie confortable en ville pour la campagne. Tout de même, c'est une existence rustique malgré la nature... youtube.com/watch?v=z2ULLTYePZ…

Thousands of Moroccans took to the streets in solidarity with #gaza with the slogan "Palestine is a free land, and the Zionists must leave" speaking out loud. The protests, organized after Friday prayers, marked the 63rd consecutive week of demonstrations across several cities in #morocco.

They were held in response to a call from the Moroccan Commission for Advocating the Nation’s Causes, an NGO, under the title: "Normalization is treason."

President Biden's domestic record wasn’t just extraordinary. It might put Democrats back in power in four years.

Trump played all his cards against China in his first term and Biden doubled down on them. They had 8 years to prepare.

Exactly, there's nothing US can do at this point short of starting a nuclear holocaust.

Trump's protectionist policies and belligerent stance towards the vassals is likely to result in a further geopolitical shift towards China as countries hedge their bets.

Today in Labor History December 21, 1925: Serge Eisenstein's silent movie The Battleship Potemkin premiered on this date in Moscow. This silent film, which inspired many later film greats, depicts the 1905 mutiny of sailors against their Czarist commanders during the Russo-Japanese war. The massacre on the Odessa steps scene was so iconic that dozens of later films paid homage to it, including Terry Gilliam’s “Brazil,” Brian De Palma’s “The Untouchables,” Peter Sellers’s “The Magic Christian,” Woody Allen’s “Bananas.” The film also influenced artist Francis Bacon. San Francisco’s avant-garde Club Foot Orchestra recreated the original score. Orson Welles, Charlie Chaplin and Billy Wilder all considered it one of the greatest films ever made.

Serge Eisenstein's silent movie *The Battleship Potemkin* is bullshit. The sailors didn't rebel at a command from Bolshie HQ. They were anarchists. They didn't take orders from Bolsheviks. They rebelled on their own volition. The Okhrana called anarchism the "navy disease" because it was so popular among sailors.

Aside from that, legend has it that Lenin was once sitting on a Swiss cafe at a table next to one occupied by exiled survivors of the mutiny. He overheard them talking about what they wanted, and subsequently plagiarized a famous slogan based on their conversation: "Peace, bread, and land". I heard this story f2f from an old anarchist. I haven't been able to discover a printed version of the story, so it may be just a legend. Anyone out there who can reliably verify or debunk it, please do.

That the film itself is bullshit is no legend. It's the verified truth of the matter.
