Fixing badly-named apps.

I talked to Allison Johnson about my home screen for her guide to living off the iPhone app grid. But I forgot to mention something: one reason I use iOS Shortcuts icons on my home screen is so I can remember what badly-named apps do.

Take the “Library” Shortcut below. It opens “CountyCat,” my local library’s app. Why is it called CountyCat? Who approved that? Doesn’t matter; it’s just “Library” to me.

One of my earliest UX wins was for Mac System 7. The Finder team wanted to truncate files names with '…' if it wouldn’t fit. I argued that too much critical info would be lost and suggested it be in the middle instead. The Finder team loved it and implemented it later that day. They were so easy to work with.

I'd totally forgotten about it until I overheard someone commenting it was an example of Apple's attention to detail. I'd didn't say anything at the time but yeah, that was me ;-)

What I so enjoyed about the Finder team was that there was no string utility to remove the middle of the string. They had to write it themselves. It was extra work they just took on. I never heard a peep from them about "implementation complexity".

It's experiences like this that have spoiled me. When I hear over (and over) that UX needs to "work within business goals" I think back to this experience where I just had an idea... and they did it.

Why was it so easy then, and so hard now?

EDIT: I have to remark! THIS IS a super-dumbed-down version of what #Endeavor can do. I mean, it's decked out as #KDE

I can't rem how to use those desktops.
that's #XFCE if you didn't know from the mouse.

Took a break from working on getting the Photoshop installer working.

Did a workaround to get Photoshop up and running on Linux just to see where modern CC is at performance wise, minus some small graphical glitches it was mostly fine.

Definitely going to have to work on either getting it to ignore ink or get ink working though as no pressure sensitivity.

Will worry about that once we've got the installer actually working properly though.

"Between 2010 and 2023, the #GreenlandIceSheet thinned by 1.2 meters on average. However, thinning across the ice sheet's margin (the ablation zone) was over five times larger, amounting to 6.4 meters on average.

The most extreme thinning occurred at the ice sheets outlet glaciers, many of which are speeding up."

I discuss this with family and friends a lot. The problem with this argument is the context. Imagine a competition between the academics and the football team of a University. If the competition is intellectual most likely academics will win but if they play football or I don't know, run or lift weights then athletes will win. These fascists are changing the game we're playing. It doesn't matter how smart you are. It didn't matter in Hungary, Russia, Turkey or many other countries. I moved to the US 8 and became a citizen 3 years ago. I've been trying to help fellow Americans see beyond this exceptionalism. If we don't acknowledge the threat and our weaknesses we'll lose just like them.
