OPINION: "Heavy" websites which pile on the megabytes with pages bloated far beyond their useful contents are hit hard when shared on Mastodon. A moment for reflection? No. news.itsfoss.com/mastodon-link…

There are so many poor engineering decisions leading to this problem. But it could be worse; each client could generate its own unique link preview, instead of each server creating one for the people using it.

Maybe this points to a solution for @Gargron and co? What if the account posting the link generated the link preview, and sent it as part of the post metadata?

This would probably require a spec documenting how to package and send the link preview metadata, in a way that could be reliably interpreted by AP servers. Whether running Mastodon and otherwise. One way to do this would be an FEP.

in reply to Strypey

@strypey this is discussed every time that comes up, but the problem isnt how to do it, its how to prevent abuse. Forging link previews opens up new phishing etc options.

How to prevent abuse is part of the how of doing it, for sure. But are any of the potential harms worse than massive unavoidable wastage of bandwidth and server power, which disproportionately impacts independently-hosted sites? I suspect not. It's is a significant limiter to horizontal scaling of the fediverse.

Besides, for hypothetical abuses like phishing, they feels less like a protocol level problem, and more of a UX problem to be fixed by client apps.

@strypey @deutrino @Gargron Hi Strypey, Deutrino, any thoughts on what some are saying, that Itsfoss could make their pages smaller? perhaps a bit of load balancing? ^KM

That's always a good idea;

But you mention your webserver is able to recognise hits from Mastodon servers. Does that mean you can do the same for any ActivityPub server?

If so, could you serve a mini-version of the page to them, containing no JS, and only the title, image, etc they need to display a link preview?

You also said in your article;

"The current solution includes blocking Mastodon as a user-agent, which would disable our link previews, making it look like spam and uninformative."

Maybe, but if every website started doing that, it might motivate the Mastodon devs to address the problem.

Well my attempt to install windows 98se on Qemu, and then Shivers II: Harvest of Souls, was a success! It took many hours of fiddling, trying to figure out how to get files from the host to the VM, trying to get graphics and audio working in the VM, but it all came out like 10x better than I expected it to work! And I got a couple of hours in with the game! It's not perfect, but it's playable!

on the 30 year anniversary of A-infos launched in 1994, they continue to stand as an international anarchist newswire; forming a community amongst anti-authoritarians, anarcho-communists, syndicalists & other revolutionary groups to collectively share news.

“A-infos created an international network that managed to eschew the individualism and market-driven constraints of its digital media counterparts. The project remains committed to anarchism as a ‘social theory’, rejecting both liberal reformism and also symbolic activism which substitutes mass struggle for performative gestures. As the biography of the A-infos page puts it, their work is rooted in the tradition of the Haymarket martyrs and the critique of authoritarianism.”

a helluva lot better than the AP

We invite you to join in organizing festivals of resistance on the weekend of January 18, immediately before Donald Trump takes office.

crimethinc.com/festivalsofresi…

By organizing ahead of Trump’s inauguration, we can seize the initiative and set our own timeline rather than being caught flat-footed and forced to react. We need to welcome new participants into these struggles and foster a revolutionary perspective that can orient us through the challenges ahead.
