do not know where people got i’d be celebrating rich people losing everything in these fires. maybe you haven’t gotten the point of my talking about surviving hurricanes in the past, but losing everything to a storm of water is super traumatic; CAN’T IMAGINE FIRE.

i have a lifetime of PTSD and being homeless by weather disasters and then years later by poverty have fucked me up.

homelessness is homelessness. no matter how much money you may have, you can’t buy back your lifetime of mementos…

cannot impress upon you enough how traumatic and devastating homelessness is.

it’s not just about the building, it’s about the safe space where you can just be and the thigs you hold onto, to remember to never forget.

have no idea how many thousands of people been affected, but the area is supposedly as big as NYC.

i can’t even.

money won’t fix all what they’ve lost. trauma doesn’t work like that.

PS,

i’ve never been the same since having to sleep in nyc subways and wherever i could safely crash. sure, it wasn’t for a long time, about 4 months, but it fucked me up. and that happened +30 years ago.

btw, the homeless NYU student is a common occurrence. no university should be sitting on billions while their students have nowhere to live.

there are many ways people become homeless.

USA is a sociopathic culture that revels on the misfortune of others.

change that.

Earlier the @VP and I received a briefing from Governor Newsom, Mayor Bass, and FEMA Administrator Criswell.

While the winds have died down, we expect they will remain a threat until early next week. We'll keep working 24/7 to support state and local officials to fully stop these fires.

I will also make sure California has every possible resource to fight these fires and help survivors. Survivors should go to DisasterAssistance.gov or call the number: 1-800-621-3362 as soon as possible.

I'm baffled that the Linux Foundation is supporting Google-based browsers, but it is.

Apparently the idea is to broaden the ecosystem, but I don't see how anyone but Google benefits from this in the long run.

Why baffling? It's a corporation, partly run by Microsoft. The board find ways to profit from open source projects.

in reply to Pete Gontier

@integerpoet I predict Meta isn’t going to experience user flight, because there isn’t an alternative like Mastodon or Bluesky that can give people an equivalent experience.
in reply to Dave Rahardja

Also true. But they might not flee anywhere but television and, I don’t know, hanging out in meatspace? Because I didn’t flee Twitter on principle. It just took Lonny putting it onto a worse trajectory in the weeks following purchase to wake me to the fact that the experience had already been too close to a net negative in my life for too long. if Mastodon hadn’t existed I would still have bailed from Twitter.

“When an 84-year-old man in Hong Kong was admitted to a hospital for a condition related to an enlarged prostate, doctors noticed something else—he was oddly gray.

His skin had an ashen appearance. His fingernails and the whites of his eyes had become silvery. When doctors took a skin biopsy, they could see tiny, dark granules sitting in the fibers of his skin, in his blood vessels, in the membranes of his sweat glands, and in his hair follicles.

A blood test made clear what the problem was: the concentration of silver in his serum was 423 nmol/L, over 40 times the reference level for a normal result.”

"Difficult, not hopeless, times ahead"

I can do difficult. I always have. I hope this is true. I think all we can do is a little each day. Think about how each action can have further effects.

I've been doing this. It's been building bit by bit. But I'd really like to find some good ways to volunteer more.
