I got my Matrix server going for the dumbest reason ever. I like being able to text from my computer but Google Messages doesn't really like Firefox when it's got strict anti-tracking enabled. My usual solution is an Electron app that acts as a Google Messages container, but there's no ARM build for it and I'm too lazy to compile it myself.
So, I got my Matrix server updated, updated all of my bridges, and now I can text people using Fractal. Heck yeah.
Trump, Musk and Zuckerberg have declared war on facts and truth. The pushback must start now
There is a narrow window. Public media and fair reporting must be supported: the rules must be upheld, says writer and academic Emily BellEmily Bell (The Guardian)
Keir Starmer is considering plans to close a loophole
that allows foreign billionaires like Elon Musk to bankroll British political parties.
Recent reports suggest the X-owner is considering donating up to $100m
– around £80m
– to Nigel Farage’s Reform,
after signalling his support for the party.
While there are restrictions on foreign citizens donating to British political parties,
these can currently be evaded under the law,
if the donation is made via a UK-based company.
While both Farage and Musk have denied suggestions of any imminent donation,
the Reform leader has also said he would accept money were it offered.

Keir Starmer Considers Closing Elon Musk Donations Loophole to Stop 'Foreign Interference' in UK Elections – Byline Times

Even a £10k donation cap is too high. £1k is big enough to be unaffordable by most people. I would support a ban on donations from companies and a cap of £1K. For small donations, an allowance of, say, £100k per party or £1K per candidate (whichever is lower) where you don’t have to be able to account for where it came from.
This needs to come with some tracking of the kind of unaffiliated things that are common in the USA (‘oh, I’m not donating to this party, I just happen to be spending $100K running attack ads against their opposition’).
Finally, it needs to be coupled with real penalties. If you violate the rules, there is an immediate by-election where you may not stand. If you violate the rules three times, you are permanently banned from elected office. Not just a financial penalty, which just ends up being a small tax on buying politicians.
LOL. Nigel Farage ain't picky. He'll take whatever he's offered. Pity, though, that Elmo is also telling Nigel to get the hell out of Reform [sic] in favor of an undisclosed draft pick.
If Elmo donates $100 million to Reform, it would triple the amount normally spent on a UK election.
I've been thinking a lot about this @anandwrites.bsky.social post. In the first Trump term, I cared, a lot, constantly. I was extremely invested. And it was *excruciating*. I just don't think I can do that for another four years -- it would kill me. I've got to detach, dissociate a little bit.

I was talking with a reporter the other day about this. They asked why I thought guys like Bezos, Soon-Shiong, and Zuckerberg were suddenly so open with their Trumpy politics. I said that I thought it was because Elon Musk showed them that they could and they wouldn't face any real repercussions.
