I don't know, I'm seeing some black people posting today that we shouldn't be laughing, that the buffoonery is just so we take it all less seriously than we should.
I tend to think it's a matter of good satire that makes it even clearer what's happening though. And if we can't make tyrants feel like idiots for what they're doing then they just push further and further anyway.

This was beautiful, and a testament to what it means to have actual religious guidance, from someone who is every bit an actual Christian.

As Melissa Ryan says, the courage Mariann Budde shows is something we haven't seen much since Trump's election.
We have not seen it from corporate media. We won't see it there.
We won't see it from business elites — far from it.
We won't this kind of courage among the 80% of white evangelicals and 60% of white Catholics who voted for Trump, or from most leaders in that sector of US Christianity.

My spouse has spent time this morning talking to people working within Catholic immigration services for which he has written grants. They tell him there's anguish among religious groups working to protect immigrants. They know what's coming.
But as I noted, even knowing this was coming, 60% of white Catholics still voted for Trump — voted for him BECAUSE they knew this was coming.

I really appreciate the work that you do on your news threads.
I like to imagine how the sermon would have been received by Jimmy Carter.
But we see scolding from people whose compassion is cowardly, whose charity is biased, and whose humility is pure hypocrisy.
I can sometimes be unintentionally unclear.
Cowardly compassion: e.g., The right's "protection" of women and fetuses falls infinitely short of what's needed.
I should have made my support for the bishop's integrity and brilliant truth to power more explicit. In a time where the church is hardly a beacon of virtue, she absolutely shone above what we have come to expect. If only her example were the norm. (And I mean the politicians here.)
@flyhigh Will, I had a quick look at their feed. I dont feel they are trying to discredit the Bishop, but instead are playing at the game of disbelief in God, and trying to ignore the fact that Google can explain to them about other people's faith in an omnipotent being.

Alors que le gouvernement explique qu’il ne souhaite pas de hausse d’impôts généralisée, le Premier ministre a annoncé qu’il allait augmenter la taxe sur les assurances maladie complémentaires. L’explication avancée est qu’elles auraient trop augmenté les cotisations, anticipant les baisses de remboursement annoncées par le feu gouvernement Barnier et qui ont été finalement abandonnées. Mais quel mensonge ! L’augmentation de ces dernières années est largement liée au déremboursement régulier d’un certain nombre de prestations dont les plus récentes sont la hausse du ticket modérateur sur les frais dentaires, les transports sanitaires ou encore certains médicaments. Ainsi l’augmentation moyenne des tarifs des mutuelles depuis 2020 est d’environ 30 %.
Ce qui est scandaleux est que l’Etat prélève déjà un impôt sur les complémentaires de près de 14 % qui sert à financer la protection universelle maladie (ancienne CMU) et la complémentaire santé solidaire. Cet impôt est particulièrement injuste car le tarif des complémentaires est uniforme, ce qui fait que les plus pauvres paient proportionnellement plus que les plus riches et qu’en fait ce sont eux qui assurent l’essentiel de la solidarité avec les plus pauvres qu’eux ! Alors augmenter encore cette taxe est un impôt particulièrement injuste qui empêchera les mutuelles de pouvoir diminuer l’an prochain le niveau de leurs contrats du fait du trop-perçu de cette année. Ce devrait être la règle pour le financement de notre système de santé. Si une année les dépenses sont supérieures aux prévisions, les cotisations augmentent l’année suivante, si c’est l’inverse elles diminuent. C’est ce qui existe en France avec le régime particulier Alsace-Moselle qui a fait passer récemment son taux de cotisation de 1,5 % à 1,4 % du salaire. La question de l’impôt mérite une autre approche pour être accepté par les citoyens. Il doit être proportionnel aux revenus. Or aujourd’hui, ce sont les pauvres qui payent et les riches qui se gavent.
En témoigne, la récente annonce de l’explosion des dividendes des entreprises du CAC 40 qui ont atteint cette année 100 milliards d’euros. Entreprises qui par ailleurs, du fait de leur taille et de leur internationalisation contournent honteusement le paiement de l’impôt en France, ce qui fait que leur taux de prélèvement est de moins de 5 % alors que celui des petites et moyennes entreprises est de 25 %. Alors, messieurs Macron, Bayrou et consorts cesser de mentir aux Français. Il est possible d’équilibrer les comptes de la Sécu, y compris de la branche retraite, en taxant ces dividendes à hauteur de 25 %, ce qui permettrait de dégager 25 milliards d’euros pour que la Sécu ne soit plus en « déficit » et que nous puissions abroger la réforme des retraites. La conclusion de ce billet est qu’il faut supprimer les impôts injustes et rétablir ou mettre en place des impôts taxant ceux qui, depuis plusieurs décennies, accumulent des richesses qui nous manquent pour assurer le financement de notre système de santé et de nos services publics.
