What will be the longer term implications of Trump's threat (now paused) of increased tariffs on Canadian imports?
In the short term Canada may certain accede to Trump's demands, but as Roland Paris argues,
'Canadian political and corporate leaders will... face intensified pressure to reduce Canada’s vulnerability to future threats from Washington'!
A potential short-term win for Trump but poisoning US/Canada relations may have less positive consequences.
Represented by Public Citizen Litigation Group and State Democracy Defenders Fund, the Alliance for Retired Americans, the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), and the the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) filed suit today against Trump's Department of the Treasury for sharing confidential data with the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), run by Elon Musk

With the allied victory and collapse of the Ottoman empire in world war one, Britain occupied Palestine which it ruled until 1948. This was formalised by the newly created League of Nations.
Britain was awarded Palestine as one such mandate in 1922. But British rule there was never neutral.
The UK authorities blocked Palestinian rights, violently suppressed protests and prevented self-determination for the Palestinian Arab majority.

How Britain supported Zionism and prevented Palestinian freedom
Long read: British rule in Palestine during the 1920s and 1930s enabled Zionist colonisation at the expense of Palestinians.A BUSTOS (Declassified Media ltd)
The Govt. has convened a group to study how to rebuild the UK's faltering 'soft power', but continues to undermine the very organisations that have hitherto supported & extended such soft power.
Now, the British Council, which has worked quietly for decades supporting UK cultural diplomacy, having 'borrowed' money from the Govt. to survive during Covid is expecting to sell half its art collection to fund the debt, which Govt. could just forgive.
Madness!

The Israeli human rights organisation B’Tselem said that the attack by dozens of settlers on the Palestinian village of Susiya in the southern occupied West Bank on Monday was carried out amid “clear complicity” from the Israeli police, who allowed the settlers to leave.
Activist Nasser Nawaj’ah confirmed that Israeli settlers “attacked homes, smashed the windows of a number of vehicles, and made holes in a number of drinking water tanks.”

Trump Regime Purge!
The Central Intelligence Agency offered buyouts to its entire workforce Tuesday, in what officials said is a bid to bring the agency in line with President Trump’s priorities, including targeting drug cartels
The CIA appeared to be the first intelligence agency to tell its employees that they can quit their jobs and receive about eight months of pay and benefits as part of Trump’s push to remake the federal government

in reply to Alex P Roe - OLD ACCOUNT • • •I didn’t know the Government had convened a group to look at why our soft power is waning. Is there any way to input to it?

in reply to Steven Heywood • • •Thank you. “Core to the Council’s mission is the pursuit of economic growth” is deeply depressing. This Government just doesn’t get it: be nice, and the benefits will flow. It’s not the other way round!

in reply to Kim Spence-Jones 🇬🇧😷 • • •Good to see several representatives from the education sector, but BSI is missing, as is BRE. Clearly there is no appreciation of the role that standards work plays in building our soft power.

Exactly.... they really don't know what soft power actually is or how it works
Steven Heywood
in reply to Emeritus Prof Christopher May • • •They're doing this at the same time as the World Service is under the cosh so one has to wonder about the sincerity of purpose.
Emeritus Prof Christopher May
in reply to Steven Heywood • • •@Stevenheywood @KimSJ @alexproe
Agreed; the World Service (as was discussed here a couple of weeks ago) is a shadow of its former self & now less of an instrument of soft power than a demonstration of the UK's marginality

Yup. They're seeing soft power as another plank of centralised Treasury oversight. (The one department that shouldn't be allowed anywhere near is the Treasury!)
I hope someone in the group is watching what's happening to USAID and seeing what's being lost.

very much a group of the great & good.... but convened somewhere in Whitehall I think - reported, if I recall correctly, in the FT a couple of weeks ago
