I just spent nearly an hour looking for screws I assumed I knocked off the table. I just sat down to have a vape and contemplate my next move. 🤦

Over the weekend, Elon broke into the agency’s headquarters with a team of 19-year-old coders and personally gained access to government systems, including YOUR Social Security numbers and home addresses. thegodpodcast.com/p/people-ral…

What's with you calling him Elon? He's not your friend. Please, call him Musk.
in reply to God

it's not illegal, it's the job he has been hired to do, and USAID is fraught with corruption and waste, which elon was hired to get rid of, so it seems like he is just doing his job.

Do not underestimate the power of a purposely-raised exception to check if your code reaches a certain point.

However, do not forget to remove the exception before you run a test suite.

That's your free programming tip today, from me to you. Definitely not because I just forgot to remove a `raise SystemExit` from a unit test.

#FOSS is a philosophy. Individual apps may not be as feature-packed, well-supported or well-designed as their proprietary alternatives, but that has nothing to do with why FOSS is so great.

FOSS is great because of the freedoms it gives you. Typically, because the source code can be viewed and inspected, there are less/no nasties hiding there (e.g. better #privacy). Different ideas of what an app should be are supported by having different forks of a project.

Apples and oranges.

SQLite for Everyone!

My talk from the 2024 Research Software Engineering conference is up on YouTube.

youtu.be/7JHhII6ZKz0

It's a 25-minute intro to the benefits relational databases and #SQL. The target audience is "past me", from when I was working with data as a research scientist and learning #python.

It includes a tour of useful tools including #sqlitebrowser, @qgis, @datasette and #etlhelper.

Know Keeper

I tried a lot of different solutions to replace #omnivore after it was taken down. A few weeks ago I decided to open an empty IDE and write a replacement myself. It works without any #selfhosting and uses an email address as the "backend":

github.com/jersonal-com/KnowKe…

It is in a very early stage but I would appreciate feedback. If you are interested join the Google group to get access and feel free to post feedback on GitHub.

I got a thing!

My last disk lasted A LOT! So I hope I'm covered and future proof. Was more expensive but worth the Hussle of not having to be constantly worried about loosing important stuff.

I'm happy!

@dbat Yeah, motherboards have one or even two M.2 slots directly on them for SSD drives like that. The drives themselves can be very fast because of that.

@obsurveyor @dbat Yeah my plan is to use this one as main, use my current old classic ssd as secondary and retire the HDD
