Have you ever wanted a random author to read out a single word and thank you for it?

Probably not, but I'm doing that!

A Word From Our Sponsors, available now for free to Ko-Fi supporters, because I find it funny.

Both fediverse and stream sponsor words available.

@mwl hey, I didn't set this up because I'm afraid of obscure obscenities. Quite the opposite!

Honestly, there's a lot of creative folk among my ko-fi supporters. I hope they jump on the opportunity. 😂

#CIA reportedly offers buyouts to entire workforce in latest #Trump-era purge - theguardian.com/us-news/2025/f… yeah, sure - who needs a strong and capable spy agency these days...?
in reply to Glyn Moody

>>"Trump’s CIA will have a greater focus on the western hemisphere, targeting countries not traditionally considered adversaries of the US"

The US has no adversaries in the western hemisphere, including Cuba.

This is a deliberate gift to actual adversaries, including Russia, China, DPRK, and Iran.

Right, so - I'm in the UK - if I want to view the "web" from the POV of other countries (EU and Australia mainly) what is the best "service" to use for this? Cheap as possible. Use cases including video streaming region-locked content and general browsing, doesn't need to be huge bandwidth, just enough to stream 1080p I guess.

MUST be able to use it with #Linux, and ideally simply plug-in to #FireFox.

I assume some #VPN service is the answer for this.

Host your own Fediverse instance and have it run without any technical stress?

The online magazine GNU/Linux.ch has put together a very good list of providers for Fediverse hosting. (in German language)

#Fediverse #Mastodon #Friendica #ManagedHosting #Hubzilla #Pixelfed #Sharkey #Mobilizon #Castopod #Selfhosting #Hosting #Linux #joinfediverse #opensource

Starting this week I'll be helping the @nllgg to co-maintain their Mastodon account together with @zandbelt. Which means the account is going to be active again!

The #NLLGG and their #events are for anyone, no matter if you're a #beginner or an #expert. So if you like #Linux and/or #FOSS feel free to follow us there 🐧 🇳🇱 .

We're #Dutch and our focus is on Dutch speaking areas, so that's our main language. But don't be shy, we're quite welcoming 😉.

Hundreds of women raped and burned to death after Goma prison set on fire

Summary

Hundreds of female inmates were raped and burned alive in Goma’s Munzenze prison after M23 rebels, backed by Rwanda, seized the Congolese city on January 27.

The UN has been unable to investigate due to M23-imposed restrictions. The rebels, controlling Goma, unexpectedly declared a ceasefire amid concerns they aimed to advance south.

UN officials urged diplomatic pressure on Rwanda, which denies involvement despite evidence.

Thousands of bodies remain unburied, and humanitarian conditions are dire as fears of further violence persist.

Jesus... D.R.C. never seems to get any better...

Great book on the area, a natural history book reviewer went there to examine some local legends, the result is a harrowing tale and that was published almost 30 years ago now:

For more lighthearted stuff by the same author, I suggest "Into the Heart of Borneo" and "In Trouble Again" about the Amazon.

For a really depressing read of the conflict there is en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shake_Ha… by the commander of U.N. forces there.

And some relevant parts of the underrated goodreads.com/book/show/905834…

DRC is the richest country in the world because of their rare earth minerals. Half the world is fighting proxy wars over there to steal Congo's resources.

Jamelle Bouie: '“Constitutional crisis” does not even begin to capture the radicalism of what is unfolding in the federal bureaucracy and of what Congress’s decision not to act may liquidate in terms of constitutional meaning.'

in reply to Jeff Jarvis

Bouie: "A power-mad president possessed of radical theories of executive authority and convinced of his own royal prerogative has given de facto control of most of the federal government to one of the richest men on the planet, if not the richest, whose own interests are tangled up in those of rival governments and foreign autocracies as well as the United States."
in reply to Jeff Jarvis

There is no written law that gives the President the ability to create a new government department with the wave of his hand. None of these criminal jokers from DOGE have security clearance for the systems they're hacking. They all have earned felonies, which obviously Felon Trump won't enforce.
