"top lawyers and officials in the administration made the determination that since the flights were over international waters, Boasberg's order did not apply."

I imagine complying with the judge's order damn sure applied to admin lawyers standing on U.S. soil.

If the US is going to denaturalize and deport anyone, it should be for visa violations - for instance Elon Musk's illegal working under a fraudulently obtained student visa.

Ship owner says arrested captain of cargo vessel involved in North Sea collision is Russian

Summary

The Russian captain of the cargo ship Solong remains in U.K. custody after its collision with a U.S. military-contracted tanker, Stena Immaculate, in the North Sea.

One sailor is missing, and both vessels caught fire. Authorities found no foul play but are investigating. The Solong had previously failed safety inspections in 2023, including steering-related issues.

The crash caused jet fuel to spill, raising environmental concerns, though Greenpeace suggests an "environmental disaster may have been narrowly averted."

UK authorities have found no evidence of foul play as US and Portugal lead the investigation.

in reply to MicroWave

Port inspection documents show the Solong failed steering-related safety checks in Dublin, Ireland, in July, with the vesselโ€™s โ€œemergency steering position communications/compass readingโ€ unreadable. Inspectors found a total of 10 deficiencies, including โ€œinadequateโ€ alarms, survival craft โ€œnot properly maintainedโ€ and fire doors โ€œnot as required.โ€

An inspection in Scotland in October found two other deficiencies. The ship wasnโ€™t detained after either inspection.

So, probably gross negligence rather than a deliberate act. Probably.

Portugal government loses no-confidence vote, possibly setting up new elections

Portugal could be heading to its third general election in three years after the centre-right government of Prime Minister Luis Montenegro lost a vote of confidence on Tuesday evening, March 11. The vote was called over conflict-of-interest accusations against Montenegro involving a family business. A last-minute attempt to avoid the vote failed when terms could not be agreed for setting up a mooted parliamentary inquiry.

The government "tried everything right up to the last minute to avoid snap elections," Montenegro said when leaving parliament.

The Socialist Party (PS), the main opposition party, and the far-right Chega party both voted to bring down the government, and the country's president Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa must now decide whether to dissolve the assembly and call new elections.

At least 100 passengers freed from Pakistan train siege

Armed militants in Pakistan's Balochistan region have attacked a train carrying more than 400 passengers and taken a number of them hostage, military sources told the BBC on Tuesday.

The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) fired at the Jaffar Express Train as it travelled from Quetta to Peshawar.

The separatist group said it had bombed the track before storming the train in the remote Sibi district, claiming the train was under its control.

At least 16 militants have been killed and 100 passengers were freed as of Wednesday morning, local media reported. The BBC has not been able to independently verify those figures.

Among those released are 17 injured passengers, who have been admitted to hospital for treatment.

The militants had threatened to kill hostages if authorities did not release Baloch political prisoners within 48 hours, according to local reports.

The rescue operation is ongoing.

in reply to saltesc

They bombed the track, they weren't planning on going anywhere. I think the plan is about the hostages
in reply to Biskii

Oh, I thought they just said they did to get the train to stop faster.

EU announces 'countermeasures' to US steel, aluminum tariffs

Summary

The EU announced retaliatory tariffs on US goods after the Trump imposed up to 25% tariffs on EU steel and aluminum.

The EU's measures, matching the $28 billion (โ‚ฌ26 billion) impact, will target steel, aluminum, textiles, leather, home appliances, plastics, and agricultural products.

The tariffs will be phased in from April 1 to April 13. Trump claims tariffs address unfair trade, but critics warn they could harm US consumers and markets.

Financial concerns persist, but Trump insists on downplaying recession risks.

US aid deliveries to Ukraine back to previous levels, Polish foreign minister confirms, as Kyiv agrees to 30-day ceasefire

Polish foreign minister Radosล‚aw Sikorski has just confirmed that US aid deliveries to Ukraine coming through the Polish logistics hub in Rzeszรณw-Jasionka have returned to previous levels seen before the brief pause.

Sikorski spoke at a press conference alongside his Ukrainian counterpart Andryi Sybiha, who stopped in Poland on his way back from Jeddah.

Sybiha, speaking in Polish, said that Ukraine was โ€œthe country that wants to end this war, and [achieve] a just, lasting peace the most.โ€

in reply to IndustryStandard

Ukraine and US agree to 30 day ceasefire, doesn't look like the Russians were included in that negotiation.

I'm not going to hold my breath

in reply to Diva (she/her)

Even if they did Russians just violate them.

in reply to Spacehooks

with expert negotiation tactics like this at play I can't imagine why
in reply to Diva (she/her)

Itโ€˜s not like Putin respected similar agreements the other 20 times theyโ€˜ve agreed to them.
in reply to Diva (she/her)

I think the agreement was that US aid renews immediately, but the ceasefire only starts when (if) russia agrees to it. And if it doesn't, I guess that would at least very obviously show which side actually wants peace here. inhales another batch of copium
in reply to rockerface ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฆ

I'm just saying that usually if you expect an agreement the bare minimum is including the other party in negotiations
in reply to Diva (she/her)

russia already has been negotiating with US though. If both parties would rather have US mediate the agreement, how does that make either of them not included?
in reply to rockerface ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฆ

Everyone is confused because at no point has the US confirmed Russia has agreed to the same ceasefire.

A ceasefire which only party has agreed to is not a ceasefire. Calling it one over and over and maybe aid dependent on it makes no sense.

in reply to Diva (she/her)

I doubt anything is going to stop Putin in the long run, other than a definitive loss. I'm interested to see how Trump responds when he's forced to confront the fact that geopolitics is not like demanding a refund at McDonalds because your nuggies are cold.
