ICYMI: Falling confidence in vaccination illustrates how the media’s obsession with balance and impartiality, and its aversion to regulation, can kill. mainlymacro.blogspot.com/2025/…
Vaccination rates are falling. It is the media as much as populists who are to blame for this.

Scientists have announced that a dim star in a constellation easily visible after dark from the Northern Hemisphere is finally on the verge of exploding. The binary star system, called T Corona Borealis (TCrB), dramatically brightens approximately every 80 years and was last observed doing so in 1946, making it a once-in-a-lifetime event. It could become visible to the naked eye next week.

good thoughts there! I'd put in some good old "copyright law doesn't fix monopolies, that's what we need competition law (enforcement) for". Because if these companies weren't so powerful in the first place, all the rest would also work better. We've just forgotten how to enact competition law. Becasue that would mean splitting apart the big companies until nobody can become a billionaire from them.

While AI scraping might not be a copyright problem (though model output most definitely can), it is a common infrastructure problem. Just from the last week

thelibre.news/foss-infrastruct…

Using copyright to tackle it might not be the right approach (CFAA could be a better fit at this point LOL), but saying that "Scraping against the wishes of the scraped is good, actually" without any qualification is at best problematic.

Even if put human (not corporate) consent aside, there's both material and moral difference between institution responsibly collecting data in public interest and extractive enterprises imposing massive negative externalities on publicly available resources.

Good thing that article has over 300 words of qualifications relating to that statement, then.

in reply to Dusty Attic

@dustyattic i think the article could have done a better job of distinguishing between benefits to humans and perceived detriments to corporations, as, yes, that is a relevant distinction that was only taken up fully in regards to privacy. And nothing in the discussion will be the gospel to follow unquestioned.

At least five children were killed in an Israeli airstrike on Gaza City overnight after Israel destroyed Gaza's only specialised cancer treatment facility, the Turkish-Palestinian Friendship Hospital.

The Health Ministry in Gaza denounced the attack as a "heinous crime". It warned that the destruction of the already overwhelmed medical infrastructure would have catastrophic consequences for patients needing urgent care.

The Yemeni Houthi group reported on Saturday that it had targeted Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport with a hypersonic missile for the third time in 48 hours.

In a statement, the Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said: "In support of the oppressed Palestinian people and their brave resistance, our missile forces successfully targeted Ben Gurion Airport in occupied Jaffa with a hypersonic Palestine 2 missile."
