Why Trump is struggling to secure fast ceasefire in Ukraine
“When Donald Trump met President Zelensky in New York last September, the then US presidential candidate exuded confidence he could bring the war in Ukraine to an early end. "If we win, I think we're going to get it resolved very quickly," he said.
How quickly he meant varied over time. In a TV debate a few days earlier, Trump had promised he would "get it settled before I even become president". This was an escalation on his previous commitment in May 2023 to stop the fighting in the first 24 hours of his presidency.
Trump has now been in office for more than two months and the penny may be beginning to drop in the White House that trying to end a conflict as bitter and complex as this may take time.”

Along with the regression of their options for treatment, autistic children in Palestine face the material isolation that comes with living under an occupying force.
It's further salt in the wound to realise that US taxpayer money props up the occupation.
In the occupational therapy sector, autism centres and educational facilities are underfunded and overcrowded, making it more difficult for autistic children to receive the care they need.

Sometimes I look around at the UK, and think for years our political class has been 'kicking the can down the road' on so many things....
and now we have reached that pile of cans & they have no real ability to deal with the mess the pile represents.
And as Rachel Reeves stands on the pile of cans, declaring her fiscal rules must be met whatever it entails, the true hopelessness of the future seems all too clear.

in reply to mrsjmccrimmon • • •Huh? How is it complex? It is very simple. Putin wants Russia to expand to regain its "former glory". Zelensky is not rolling over but defends his country. The West supports Ukraine to honour the Budapest Memorandum but also to have access to its resources. They are hesitant to send boots on the ground to prevent escalation.

in reply to mrsjmccrimmon • • •First of all, he completely underestimated the problem. He thought he could just tell Zelenskyy to stop and the war would be over.
Second, as he is obeying the commands of Putin, he simply wants Ukraine to surrender, completely disregarding that Russia is the aggressor here, and their role in crimes of war and crimes against humanity.
If he had any clue about striking deals, he would be aware that telling one party to just roll over and die is not a successful strategy.

in reply to mrsjmccrimmon • • •It should come as a surprise to nobody that a complete unwillingness to have something come to an end is quite a barrier to said thing coming to an end.
That mixed with incompetence, even if he wanted the cash cow that is the illegal invasion of Ukraine to end, he's not intelligent enough to navigate that.
