Despite being technically “nonpunitive,” these detention facilities are indistinguishable from jails, or are in many cases literal jails that the federal government is effectively renting from local law enforcement.

“Though #Biden is willing to help, Dems aren’t unanimous in wanting them to. Some party activists believe Biden is an admired figure who remains a draw inside a grateful party.

…Others argue that reminding voters of a 2024 campaign that went sour isn’t the best strategy for a party that is grasping for a message and searching for new, younger leaders”

I agree about relitigating past battles but it would be well worth identifying anything that can be stopped next time round. Fwiw I always thought he tried in 2020 so I was really surprised Biden and state boards didn't sort out anything they could before his next run. I know it's v tinfoil but he's not exactly known for his rule-following. Stuff seems to have been going on for years but people are always blocked from looking into it. sunlightfoundation.com/2015/08…

None of the shenanigans the Right pull can be stopped by government, past warning citizens to stand up and vote & check their registration etc. To change gerrymandering etc requires us to get off our collective asses & vote in state house & senate majorities & blue governors. Obama, Biden etc have been telling us this for literally decades. WE are both the solution & part of the problem. A Representative Democracy doesn’t work unless we “represent”. @GottaLaff

FTR: Fuck #Spotify

However, I found this to be a brief but interesting peek into how music royalties work, how Snoop (of course) didn’t share the full picture with that “only $45K from Spotify for a billion streams of a song” complaint, and a reminder that we rarely get the full story on anything these days.

Example: There were two other major artists on that track *and thirteen credited writers*

in reply to David Chartier

to make things more interesting: if that song had a billion plays on the radio, Snoop, as an artist and/or songwriter would have gotten NOTHING. Only the label gets money for radio plays (which is why a lot of artists create their own labels). With digital the artists at least get something, but the labels still get the biggest cut.
in reply to Gregatron5

@gregatron5 Oh wow, that’s really surprising. I always thought artists got *something* from radio. That’s rough
in reply to Gregatron5

@gregatron5 I’ve always found the radio plays vs streams difference to be interesting. A billion streams is a billion individuals plays of a song. But it’s so hard to say who is actually listening to the radio. I know they’ll have listener numbers for advertising, but that’s still a big assumption that every listener is wanting to hear your song.

I’d expect a billion ears on radio to be worth a lot less than a billion direct streams as a result (even to the label).

in reply to Mo

@mkelly interestingly, satellite radio has a similar problem. They just broadcast but can’t verify how many people were actually listening, so they have a different payment structure than streaming services.
@Mo
in reply to Gregatron5

@gregatron5 @mkelly Huh. I always assumed radio could measure listeners with some semblance of accuracy. Like maybe distributing antennas had to increase power to the main deflector or whatever as more people turned a radio on to pull in signal. That’s wild.
in reply to David Chartier

@gregatron5 @mkelly Radio waves are extremely non-directional so there is no way of actually measuring who is intercepting and listening to the signal they transport.
in reply to Ariaflame

@ariaflame @gregatron5 @mkelly All these years and no one has invented directional radio waves?? The US really *is* falling behind
in reply to David Chartier

@gregatron5 @mkelly And the point of them would be? I mean there are some ways of doing it for radio waves but due to the large wavelengths it's not easy. But the whole point of radio that you listen to is that it's easy to just broadcast it in all directions and then pick up as you need it. So there are limited applications where the effort to focus radio waves becomes relevant, but trying to do ratings is not one of them.

'For nearly a decade, Mr. Johnson has wielded confidentiality agreements to control his image and the companies he built atop that image. His employees, sexual partners, vendors and contract workers have all had to sign the documents, sometimes in exchange for settlements, severance or continued employment at his firms, according to people close to him and his start-ups, internal documents and court records.'
