If it was "normal" to wear a helmet, even fewer people would die and there would be no additional angst associated with it. The car(s) keeping less distance is an education issue, not a point against helmets. (Interesting observation though)
Also, why is this framed as an "either / or" question? You can recommend helmets AND deal with structural problems that affect safety.

in reply to Jurjen Heeck 🍋 • • •Sure - that is a valid point. *If* it would even be true in a country like the Netherlands where bike riding is such a big part of the culture.
Helmets could be compulsory for children under a certain age, for example. If the "marketing" campaign simply likened them to seatbelts or children's car seats, they would become normal. Adults could make their own choices.
Like my helmet, which is designed like a 1920s hat! Fashion AND safety 😁. (I get a lot of compliments on it).

in reply to Jurjen Heeck 🍋 • • •To a foreigner like me, this govt obsession with preventing a little anxiety about e.g. test results, helmets etc is *such* a weird thing. It's also used to justify reducing medical testing - when, of course, the motivation is almost always cost.
I would *much* rather be a little anxious about something than dead through not implementing testing or wearing PPE.

Unknown parent • • •@maartjeS I grew up in a different culture and wearing a helmet was just normal. So the opposition to it seems very weird to me - for me it is like wearing a seatbelt in a car. Not a big deal.
Still, I don't think it needs to be required, just recommended.
