Good news for greying geeks: "Use of digital technologies was associated with reduced risk of cognitive impairment."

Final sentence in abstract is crucial - what is the direction of causality here.
Having said that, I’d suspect anyone using a term like “digital dementia” of having some cognitive deficits of their own. Wandering the Internet instead of watching MAFS etc for hours a day and relying on TV/talk radio for news is supposed to dumb you down? Give me a break.

"In the rolling hills of New York’s Finger Lakes — a region famed for its wineries, trout streams, and eco-tourism — an old power plant is at the center of a new and troubling trend. At first glance, the Greenidge Generation facility in Dresden, NY may seem like a relic of the past. But it now plays a leading role in the fast-growing, poorly understood world of cryptocurrency mining."

"Bitcoin mining in the U.S. now accounts for up to 2.3% of energy use, costing Americans upwards of $1 billion in higher energy bills annually. In places like Dresden, NY, the community pays the price in water, air quality, and environmental peace of mind."

"The Bitcoin operation benefits from a “behind-the-meter” rate — a discounted electricity price that makes mining profitable, but only because Greenidge sells power to itself at a rate the rest of us don’t get."

Political activist Abed Abou Shhadeh argues that Israeli society is in a state of “hypernormalisation” - a term coined by anthropologist Alexei Yurchak to describe the surreal final years of the Soviet Union, when everyone knew the system was broken but pretended otherwise.

He says that the recent execution of 15 medics and rescue workers by the Israeli army in Gaza, should have prompted outrage. Instead, it was met with silence inside Israel.

When you compose a message there should be symbols at the bottom (depending on what app you use). For me on Tusky, a paperclip adds media, then next is visibility - if you click on it, you should have options. There is a "Direct - post to mentioned users only". Just make sure your message starts with their name. Be aware it's not properly private - I think your Instance owner can read them. Hope that helps @FediTips is a great place for info...

Hey Jayson, welcome! 👋 There's lots of help for new people on the website at fedi.tips (especially "Quick Start" at the top) and feel free to ask if you want help with anything 🙂

Thanks for the mention Helen! 🙏

"I think your Instance owner can read them"

Just to add, this is a real risk but there's no official or easy way for an admin to do this. Admins would have to browse the instance's raw database which isn't exactly convenient.

There were 5,426 data centers in the USA as of March 2025, and the number is skyrocketing. Collectively, these centers consumed about 17 gigawatts (GW) of power in 2022 (for context, a large nuclear power plant generates about 1 GW).

From 2018 to 2021, number of data centers more than doubled, to 2,600, and then more than doubled again in the next four years. The 176 terawatt-hours (TWh) consumed by data centers in 2023 represented 4.4% of total U.S. electricity

in reply to Gerry McGovern

"About 56% of the electricity used to power data centers nationwide comes from fossil fuels. Data centers’ projected electricity demand in 2030 is set to increase to up to 130 GW (or 1,050 TWh), which would represent close to 12% of total U.S. annual demand. Building new fossil-fuel plants to fulfill this demand will increase carbon emissions and further contribute to climate change."
