I don’t think you are overthinking it, but you are thinking about it. Which is the point of a blog post, email, or letter. It’s why I hardly ever read socials and even more rarely interact with them. I’ll dip in, much like eavesdropping on someone’s conversation at the pub when I buy the next round. Because the conversations are easily said, seldom considered, and almost never memorable.
But even a poor letter strikes a chord, because it is considered.
It's the kind of garbage we call authenticity, which we value much more than the staged, polished "content" corporate platforms force us to perform and flood with.

Introduction
The Third Kingdom Games did a crowd funding campaign for an Old-School Essentials resource book chock full of different player options.

Construction
The cover for the OSR Advanced Player Options hardcover I like the artwork of the cover. It is simple black & white art, but it definitely has a nostalgic vibe. It feels like it is reminiscent of old cover that keeps tickling at the back of my mind, but I can’t quite identify the cover for what. The binding of the OSR Advanced Player Options The book is a smyth bound hard cover. With some 336 pages, it has a healthy heft to it and feels like it will definitely survive extended usage at a gaming table.
Book Material
The book is split into four major sections: Introduction, Miscellany, Classes, and Magic. The largest by far is the classes section. I really liked that the sections are separated by the black section bands at the page edge, which bleeds to the paper edge and is visible when the book is closed. OSR Advanced Player Options Spread on Gnolls The artwork in the book is black and white art that is consistent in feel to many OSR related gaming materials. There is even the nice little scroll detail at the top and bottom of each page, which helps in breaking all of the text up so it doesn’t appear to be walls of text.
The Introduction section discusses the concept of playing by post (PBP), with some good advice that I had to learn the hard way when I first attempted it a couple of decades ago. Though, some of the advice for PBP, is applicable to the rest of roleplaying games as well, particularly the bits about not writing a novel and not treating other characters as puppets.
The Miscellany section covers a number of different things that could be included, such as: skills, combat maneuvers, fighting styles, cost of living, advancing animal companions, channeling divinity, founding a temple, weapons of legacy, wounds, prestige classes (not like in 3rd edition).
The classes section is massive with a wide range of different classes that one could easily pick from to make your campaign world feel very customized, or perhaps just open the flood gates and let them all be available to the players. Some classes are only a couple of pages, while others are quite a few. Todd Leback didn’t skimp to keep page counts here, he included everything that was necessary to detail the class and even provided examples to help in the explanations.
The Magic section expands significantly on the different options for what magic is or how it can be done. The high-points in this section are: magical item creation, crafting of magical items, researching spells, ritual magic, summoning circles, and of course there are new spells included as well.
Conclusion
Overall, it reads like a very large collection of house rules that have been formatted and edited for sharing with others. This impression is even hinted at in the very first sentence of the Introduction, “This book is a collection and compilation of the material I’ve written over the past seven or so years.” I do recommend this book for anyone playing OSE and looking to expand the player options at your table, or if you’re looking for something different to add some customized flavor to your campaign world.
