Warum betone ich »nichtmenschliche Tiere«? Weil wir AUCH Tiere sind, Säugetiere, Wirbeltiere etc.

Trump Administration to resume collections on student loan borrowers in default

The Education Department says millions of borrowers in default will have a chance to make a payment or sign up for a repayment plan. But on May 5, those who don't will be referred for collection.

"American taxpayers will no longer be forced to serve as collateral for irresponsible student loan policies," U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon said in a statement."

Until the wealthy start paying their fair share this wealthy person needs to leave me, a LOYAL taxpaying American, out of it.

Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves declared April 2025 as Confederate Heritage Month in Mississippi, keeping alive a 32-year-old tradition that began in 1993.

A member of the Rankin Greys, a Sons of Confederate Veterans camp based in Florence, announced the governor's proclamation.

If you're in Te Whanganui-a-Tara this week, there's an anticapitalist conference happening on Wed 23 and Thu 24 April;

proutresearch.nz/conference/po…

Old lefties often have a negative reaction to anything associated with Prout, but I suggest putting that to one side, and looking at the list of speakers, including US workplace democracy advocate Richard D Wolff;

If wasn't in Te Wai Pounamu visiting whānau, I'd probably go.

Here's a talk by Richard D Wolff about the decline of the US empire and the denial its political class are in about it, which someone made into a video and posted it on a PeerTube channel;

Kiwis, remember he's speaking at an anticapitalist conference in our capital city this week.

Last time a major empire collapsed it was the British, resulting in an economic crisis that hit Aotearoa in the 1970s. NZ governments reacted to by pivoting to the "Washington Consensus" (what academics call "neoliberalism"). Roughly 2 decades of "strucutural adjustment" (corporatisation of public services) and allegiance to a US-dominated "rules-based international order". The NZ political class seem as blind as their US counterparts to the fact that this is all over bar the shouting.

I wonder how the decline of the US as a military-industrial power will affect Aotearoa, and how we will respond?

In a world of declining energy supplies, a sensible policy would be to reduce dependence on long distance supply chains. By investing heavily in moving production as close as possible to point of use. Exactly the opposite of the globalisation imperative, to treat the world as one country, and produce wherever it's cheapest on paper.

Any political parties talking about this?

Here's Richard D. Wolff explaining how he, a Marxian economist, responds to accusations that Marx's ideas lead inevitably to the worst outcomes of political revolutions started in their name, Stalinist gulags, the Maoist Cultural Revolution, the killing fields of the Khmer Rouge, etc

It would be intriguing to hear a debate on the origins of the current turn to fascism, in the US and elsewhere, between Richard D Wolff;
