While the Modern Slavery Act was (is) well intended, the effect(s) of a continued 'hostile environment' for migrants, is that victims of modern slavery are often unwilling to report their situation because they are afraid of being deported if they do.

Once again, the state is punishing victims (the vulnerable) while effectively letting their captors ('masters') go free.

One more dysfunctional & cruel policy form our callous political class!

What’s the big idea?

After a modest list of achievements in its first term, Labor has the majority and political capital to pursue more ambitious goals in its second term, so what policy reforms should it take on? #auspol

In other news, I'm almost there with a version 0.1.0 of FIRES

I've just authentication to land, and then you'll be able to spin up the FIRES reference server and create Labels for labelling things in the future (label vocabularies)

These labels will then be used for the Datasets which will be in 0.2.0 of FIRES

For the full diff of all the work that has gone into FIRES over the last few months, have a look at: github.com/fedimod/fires/compa…

in reply to Emelia πŸ‘ΈπŸ»

If you don't understand what labels are or label vocabularies, see:

- fires.fedimod.org/concepts/lab…
- fires.fedimod.org/concepts/ter…

Essentially they help communicate human and machine readable information about changes to datasets

in reply to Emelia πŸ‘ΈπŸ»

Keep in mind that FIRES is a *protocol* for sharing moderation advisories and recommendations, it's *not* a blocklist, and we'll have wireframes explicitly showing how the datasets should be integrated into fediverse software.

I do not operate a FIRES server, I do not do moderation.

If I did operate a public FIRES server it'd be one that has datasets on disposable email domains and cloud IPs. These are datasets that already exist but are just csv files you'd want to regularly import if you find them useful, and I'd just be converting them from a csv file over time into a subscribable dataset that can notify you when there's changes to review as a mod)

The thing I'm working on is a reference server implementation of that protocol, such that fediverse developers can play with it.

Universal basic income

Australia should call the cost-of-living crisis what it really is β€” a wealth gap that could be addressed with a universal basic income and real tax reform to ensure companies and the super wealthy pay their fair share. #auspol

Time to deliver

Labor made a lot of promises and spending commitments during the election campaign, so it’s now time to deliver results and achieve its housing, wages and other economic aims. #auspol

Keir Starmer is again trumpeting his cautious approach to rapprochement with the European Union, and signalling that we must look forward not back on UK/EU relations.

Well, his various comments yesterday might be positive, but looking at his positioning so far & the frustration of EU members with his 'red lines', suggests unless he follows these pious words with real action in negotiations, we just being treated to more declaratory politics without any real substance.

in reply to Emeritus Prof Christopher May

The problem with recent prime ministers of the UK is that they don't negotiate, they just issue demands (unless it's with USA of course in which case they just capitulate).

Kate Wilson was deceived into a relationship by #spycops officer Mark Kennedy. She fought a 10 year legal battle to get answers, eventually forcing the police to give her huge amounts of secret reports. The courts ruled that not just the sexual abuse but the broader political spying was unlawful.

Now Kate tells her story. Her book Disclosure: Unravelling the Spycops Files is out on 29 May.

Brand transgressions

With federal elections looming and with global politics in the spotlight, researchers from Edith Cowan University have offered political parties some sage advice, warning that broken election promises could damage the party brand and ultimately lead to a loss of political power. #auspol
