"In Spain, the tech industry is clashing with farmers and environmental activists. Amazon’s three new planned data centers in the Aragon region are licensed to use 755,720 cubic meters of water annually, enough to irrigate more than 570 acres of farmland."
“These data centers use water that comes from northern Aragon, where I am,” said farmer Chechu Sánchez, speaking to The Guardian. “They consume water — where do they take it from? They take it from you, of course.”

The regulation of emotion recognition in the EU AI Act shows a dangerous reversal of the precautionary principle. Despite the premise in recital 44 – ‘there are serious concerns about the scientific basis of AI systems aiming to identify or infer emotions […]’ – emotion recognition is prohibited only in very delimited cases. This policy choice is one of many indicators of the gradual weakening of the pillars of the European democratic society.

Anything built on so many lies cannot be good: clean, green, renewable, sustainable. Lies, lies, lies.
“There’s no such thing as clean energy,” he tells us in the title of the introduction to his buzzkill of a new book, Power Metal: The Race for the Resources That Will Shape the Future (2024).
“Renewable” energy sources and the devices and batteries that they power are, Beiser warns, “spawning massive environmental damage, political upheaval, mayhem, and murder.”

I hope it also includes APL (or one of the conventional-font descendants).
When I started doing a lot of image processing with Python and numpy, I picked up an APL book just to get into a matrix frame of mind. I didn’t program in APL, but thinking in terms of matrix operations instead of loops led to some radical optimizations in the code I was working on.
(I picked up APL because, decades earlier I heard Guy Steele, who was then working on the Fortran 9X standard as a representative for a massively-parallel-processor company, discuss how much inspiration he took from APL when thinking about parallel programming primitives.)

in reply to how to do anything • • •The image shows a purple square piece of paper placed on a green cutting mat with a grid pattern. The paper is folded in half horizontally, creating a crease down the middle. The mat has yellow lines and numbers, indicating measurements, and is positioned on a flat surface. To the right of the paper, there are three markers in orange, pink, and yellow. In the top left corner, a partially visible object with a colorful design is seen. The overall scene suggests a crafting or paper folding activity.
