It may seem paradoxical to write this in an opinion piece. But it needs saying:

Arguments alone have no meaningful effect on people’s beliefs.

And the implicit societal acceptance that they do is getting in the way of other, more effective forms of political thinking and doing

The most important reason words don’t change minds is that two other factors carry far more influence:
our social relationships;
and our own actions and experiences.

A sea of evidence demonstrates that our friends have the power to change our beliefs and behaviour
– not by arguing with us, but simply by being around us or showing us new ways of living.

There's another cognitive dynamic that shapes public opinion and voting behavior that's at least as important to know about, maybe more so because it takes place during both intentional and unintentional interactions.

People come to believe the things they hear most often around them.

Antonio Scatton explains how this works in this 90 second clip, drive.google.com/file/d/1SspiD…, taken from the April 9th episode of Stephanie Wilson's Freedom Over Fascism podcast, freedomoverfascism.us/p/antoni….

In explaining how he rescued his life from a deep involvement with MAGAts, Rich Logis observes that logic and evidence are of little avail because people suffering from MAGAism don't embrace it for its "ideas" but because it gives them (1) company and (2) identity.

The GOP didn’t get Trumped.

It got everything it ever asked for: white, loud, cruel, and allergic to accountability.

I wrote about this late last year while trying to make sense of the election.

It's a mode of thought that isn't just Republican or even American. It simmers away everywhere, confined to goose-stepping incels, racist uncles, and think tanks, until the loss of hope engendered by a disaster like 50 years of neoliberalism makes denial of reality obvious common sense.

That's why I'm not heartened by Dutton's MAGA campaign defeat. The toothpaste is out of the tube.
