>> Naval blockades are not automatically illegal. … a blockade may be used in wartime, but only if five legal conditions are met:
• it must be formally declared and publicly notified
• it must be effectively enforced in practice
• it must be applied impartially to all ships
• it must not block access to neutral ports or coastlines
• it must not stop the delivery of humanitarian aid to civilians.
>> If even one of these conditions is not met, the blockade may be considered illegal under customary international humanitarian law.

in reply to AK • • •seems odd that the article talks about how you can and can't enforce blockades, without underlining that this blockade itself is illegal, since it forms an element of Israel's illegal occupation of Gaza, as confirmed in the ICJ advisory opinion.

in reply to Paria sans portefeuille • • •I find the article somewhat awkward, but the informations are useful, anyway.
And the illegality of Israeli blockade is easy for any reader (with reasonable sense) to conclude.

in reply to AK • • •The article seems to suggest that, if the berserkers running Israel stopped starving the Gazan population, allowed in humanitarian aid, and refrained from kidnapping foreign nationals on the high seas, their blockade would somehow be a "legit," "wartime blockade."
But I don't think that's true, because the blockade of Gaza is precisely the form that Israel's illegal occupation of the strip assumed from 2007 on, as determined by the World Court.
