Whenever I say something critical about "AI" there is - given my rather general resistance - the (valid) question what kind of cases could be considered a) "good" use cases that are b) actually worth the environmental cost.
@emilymbender just did a very good webinar about that question. Watch it.
She explains what (L)LMs are, what harms they always bring and what - if ever - (very) limited use cases could actually be considered given it's technical limitations.

The image is a meme featuring two panels with contrasting scenes and text. The top panel shows a character in a red and blue suit with a mask, resembling a superhero, with a background of a cityscape and lightning effects. The text reads, "Sharks biting 57 people a year." The bottom panel features a close-up of a man with dark hair, looking intense, with a blurred background. The text reads, "New Yorkers biting 6,700 people a year." The meme humorously compares the relatively rare shark attacks to the more frequent incidents involving New Yorkers.

The cabin features a metal roof and large windows, with a wooden deck extending from the front, offering a view of the surrounding nature. Tall evergreen trees surround the cabin, creating a dense forest backdrop. The river, with its white-capped rapids, flows in the foreground, adding a dynamic element to the tranquil setting. this is #trump in 2011 saying #obama is weak so he will start a war with #iran
but pointing out the #hypocrisy is meaningless
today #MAGA is exalting over trump bombing iran
a few months ago they voted for him because he promised no more #USA #war in the #middleEast
🤦
know this:
#fascism has no coherence
it's power by any means
you adhere to principles
they do not
"hypocrisy!" is as useful as correcting the grammar on a notice sending us to concentration camps
they do not fucking care

when facing #fascism and #bigotry, you can fight them when they are small, or you can fight them when they are large, later. because you didn't fight them when they were small
those are your only choices
you never ever have the choice to kick the can down the road, or "someone else's problem," or shout "do something!" at other people
it's on you
because you will be facing them

they do not understand anything else. you can't debate. you can't convince. they do not possess reason nor morality
they only understand a bloody mouth
there is no other way
if you worry about "sinking to their level":
what the fuck do you think is happening in the #USA right now?
you are already at their level. you are fucking drowning in them

Ben Royce 🇺🇦 🇸🇩 reshared this.
the left/ #democrats have to use the full force of all levers of power and pummel them and call them out as the fascist fucks they are
"but if we do that, then if/ when the fascists gain power they will do the same"
who the fuck believes that binds #MAGA behavior?
does anyone think "oh they played nice, so we have to play nice too" is a thought that goes through the walnut sized craniums of donald #trump or that of any of his bootlickers?
north korea has elections too
obviously #usa #democracy is in peril, but that's no reason to capitulate prematurely out of #cynicism
voting is merely a realm of a larger battle
you participate because a #vote shifts the battle lines
"but i want perfection now so i'm not voting" like an airhead makes the struggle harder

there is always a rising tide of #ignorance and #indecency
it requires you to always fight it. now and forever. that's just the cost of #society
this shouldn't depress you, this should educate you on the terms of living in our reality

@Huntn00
I believe these people became easily swayed when they were disenfranchised by late-stage capitalism. In that vulnerable state, they were manipulated into joining the MAGA cult, and picking up that ideology.
We have to be careful not to assume these people are fundamentally flawed. Nobody's born a racist/xenophobe/homophobe/etc. They become that way when their sense of reality gets twisted - usually from outside manipulation.
this is like saying a rapist had a poor upbringing so we have to be careful not to judge the rapist
yes all vile crimes have their roots in poor environment
but there's plenty of people with terrible upbringings who are wise saints
and there's people with blessed upbringings who are vile bigots
so you're wrong

also because what donotpunchdown is describing is how troll farm works
they just lie, lie, lie in ways to appeal to the stupid and create power bases for malice
so when you're presented with absolute stupidity, you can err on the side of forgiveness, which let's the manipulation agendas off the hook

gold's value in ancient times as a means of exchange is due to rarity and exquisite properties that are appreciated by all
but, as a means of exchange, that only exists in an environment of civil engagement
in societal breakdown, with empty stomachs everywhere, there is no more civil engagement
there's only "i need food badly and this fucker's babbling about gold. i see cans of beans behind him, i'm going to bludgeon him and get the beans"

would be ironic if the gold bar ended up being used as a weapon...
😆
that would be the cinematic ironic twist
but
"i will win this fight because my bludgeon is made of osmium, which is denser than your puny gold"
@rowanshielding @Huntn00 @Stoneycase @jadon1 Right! Also, if you had the power to mobilise people to mine gold (this applies to other "precious" metals as well) and have someone make you jewellery from it, those adornments would have conveyed visible status. But it's actual value as a medium of exchange would have been questionable.
In the post-apocalyptic scenario, value would be determined solely by need...and you can't eat gold or make anything useful out of it (too malleable)!
Ben Royce 🇺🇦 🇸🇩 reshared this.
It's also worth meditating on the fact that when the last of us has died – possibly not long off now – gold will be worth nothing, no more than any other gravel. Potatoes, on the other hand, will still have every right and reason to thrive.

the problem is top down authority is fragile and inflexible. it becomes like a pressure cooker. then boom
resistance to ignorance and indecency must be organic
nevermind fighting fascism is not the government of china's goal. it's adherence to totalitarianism, so it's more like how things are after fascism has won
For Hypocrisy to work there must first be shame.

No, Ben, I'm not coming close to excusing it. I'm blaming those who caused it to happen.
Education has been diminished since Reagan. Even moreso after Dubya. When people have multiple places giving cover and lying for lying leaders, and those people have never been taught to think critically, you can't expect them to even understand what they don't understand.
I blame the leaders for lying. I blame the corporations for giving cover and for lying themselves.
@rowanshielding @GhostOnTheHalfShell @Huntn00 @Stoneycase @jadon1 All the Chinese people I know have VPNs and are well aware of what is going on in China and in other countries. They know China has a lot of corruption and problems, and so does the USA. They do see Falun Gong as a dangerous cult that needed stomping out. Most are not that political toward either China or the USA.
China is easier than Russia to VPN out of these days. I do tech support for people who visit both.
I'm hardly a troll or a farm. 😊
There's a difference between stupidity and ignorance.
There's no excuse for racism. None. But when the leader of the free world, every corporate media, all the "intelligence" is saying "they have wmd and were to blame for 9/11" there is an excuse. And it's not stupidity. It's that every single place that could tell the truth, lied
@bouriquet
So I've been afk since posting my comment about principles. I'm sorry you interpreted it to mean intangibles.
To take your own favorite topic, voting is one of them. It's a civic duty if you are in a democracy, be principled about it, don't just vote in a popular or convenient election, vote in those for which you are a voter.
That's the kind of thing I mean. Not just tell others "I got my Principles".
Of course there's other stuff. I'm not gonna tell you what you should hold important or even how to decide. But abandoning a position for mere inconvenience is not it. Be mindful of your decisions, and... that's the distinction.
i'm not attacking your words, i'm riffing on your comment
there are indeed good principles, like always voting
and bad principles like "we have to listen to everyone, including bigots, we defeat them in the marketplace of ideas" (no we don't)
the point is everything has its limit, and some things that people consider ironclad rules of behavior are not really ironclad, and that this inflexibility hobbles them and society, and they're not being noble, they're being foolish
@rowanshielding @Huntn00 @Stoneycase @jadon1
Ecch... economics, the subtle art of making the obvious perfectly obscure.
Any tribe of humans will quickly specialize, setting up little workshops. If you need food, you can't just trade for it, you buy it. Even in periods of civil fracas, things can be bought, especially in such times.
@tuban_muzuru @rowanshielding @Huntn00 @Stoneycase @jadon1
yes but in societal collapse you can also just take it
@rowanshielding @Huntn00 @Stoneycase @jadon1
That might work in the first few days of civil breakdown, looting and carrying on of that sort. Doesn't last. Prices skyrocket
@DoNotPunchDown @jadon1 @Huntn00
yes but where do you draw the line between "they were fooled into hurting themselves" and "they continue hurting themselves long after anyone with half a brain realizes this is just sadism and cultish servitude"
there is a line
before which you excuse. after which you condemn
There is a huge difference between "following an order" that is morally and ethically wrong, as well as against the law, and believing something that has been given as "fact" by multiple liars.
For instance, most of the country believed there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Those of us who read multiple publications and independent journalists knew it was a lie
that doesn't change what i said. in fact it reinforces what i say
that people have to bend over backwards merely to remain informed is a serious problem. it has a profound effect, because most people don't give a shit enough to go through the motions, they just marinade in lies
that you're talking to citizens of china who have circumvented the great firewall is great
but don't fool yourself that they are the majority
@tuban_muzuru @rowanshielding @Huntn00 @Stoneycase @jadon1
if you're talking about societal collapse and people are going hungry, there isn't a return civil exchange that comes back quickly, there's desperate starving people who will do anything to eat
if you're talking about after they have all fucking died, ok then you have a point
when someone in power lies to them again, do they still have an excuse?
trump going "no more war in the middle east" and so they vote for him. then he bombs iran
some angry about the 2003 iraq invasion are angry about bombing iran now. they already knew

Cultists are an entirely different animal. I have no friggin idea what to do about them. Seriously, i know smart people who have been sucked into that right-wing rabbit hole and it makes no sense. No facts are enough. Reality is gone for them. That's a frightening thing.
I'm actually working with a group right now to help get a relative out of that rabbit hole. The only thing I've learned so far (just one meeting) is facts won't help

i also have a relative who fell in the #MAGA rabbit hole
so yes, you try to help them
i wish you all success

others believe cynicism is wisdom, and in that way they prematurely capitulate
and the worst on the left attack different parts of the left, buying disinfo agendas crafted to divide and conquer. self-destructive blame games. rather than committing to pragmatic differences. but that doesn't stroke the ego of self-congratulation, their only concern
this will change
I'm just stating facts - their flaw (being MAGA) is a state, not something that they were born with (see more: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fundam…). I'm not excusing their actions, just explaining how they came to be the way they are.
fundamental attribution error is about missing temporary environmental influences on a person's behavior and jumping right to judging them personally
this is a good concept because when you do that, generally, you are being unfair and unwise
but you know what?
in all my honest sincerity, when it comes to MAGA, i wholly believe we are in fact talking about people of low character, ignorance, and indecency
