But then, my wife asked her mother to keep the family forest for the moment, she's not sure if we can afford the upkeep. (Seems a small piece of forest costs money instead of producing money, as you have to maintain it, while being small, you don't have much of efficient ways to use it. Traditionally, it was used to provide wood for heating, say hi to the PV, and self-sustaining hunting in the old days.)

in reply to Gerry McGovern • • •Interesting about the earthworms. Apparently northern forests in NA had few if any native earthworms since the ice age. European colonisation brought in several species, and while they seem to be good for farmers, have had a very bad effect on the forests.
Newer Asian imports are messing up the Appalachian woods. It's complicated.

Puts new meaning into the saying Think global, Act local; & makes me think of the farmer in Australia who started rewilding the creeks on his land, to slow down runoff & give water a better chance to soak in. Significant climatic effects within years.

Climate impacts from land disturbances do not always stay local. Depending on the level of disturbance, the climate impacts can be felt a great distance away. Often, not immediately. It could be 20 years before full impacts are felt.

in reply to Gerry McGovern • • •Vegetation has been a core component of hydrologic models going back to the first big one, the Stanford Watershed Model, in the 1950s. I also recall discussions around GCMs grappling with incorporating vegetation with my peers in the UW Surface #Water Modeling Group. That was two decades ago.
Further, I didn't see a mention of scale. In GCMs, Wash state for exempt is ~4 pixels.
