MORNING ALL!

Today is the 9th anniversary of the Brexit vote.

How do we all think it’s gone so far?

in reply to Mike Galsworthy 🦣

@Mike Galsworthy 🦣 The question is weirdly phrased by focusing on the vote aspect of Brexit, but I'd guess people still answered about whether it was right or wrong to leave the EU.

If people answered the actual question, it wouldn't say much about their opinion on the leaving aspect itself.

in reply to Mike Galsworthy 🦣

Ireland has quietly gained massively from the UK's self-imposed sanctions. Our farmers are eating your farmers' lunch. Dublin has gained thousands of financial services jobs from London. Many new ferry services (lost cabotage for UK). Amazon.ie didn't exist. Most no longer buy much from the UK. UK's trade surplus w its 5th largest and 2nd most profitable market evaporated. Big increase in UK applications for every academic & research job. Boost to intra-EU trade.

Sorry & thanks.

@davidallengreen argues persuasively that we should celebrate the two votes in the House of Commons on abortion & assisted dying as they both indicate meaningful resistance to the illiberalism of the criminal laws's invasion of our private lives.

In both cases the work is not competed (they need to navigate the House of Lords before becoming law), but I think DAG is right to draw some positive value from these developments.

Illiberalism is not inevitable!

Another thing I'd like to add, having thought about this:

It is a very good thing that we have this convention of ethical decisions being removed from the party whips. Many countries do not have that. Many countries make such issues explicitly a matter of party policy.

We should recognise that this is a rare and noble thing, and should fight to retain it.

Iranian officials issued stern warnings Monday following US airstrikes on three of the country's nuclear facilities, describing the attack as a direct act of war and pledging retaliation that could shift the region’s balance of power.

Iran’s Chief of Staff, Major General Abdolrahim Mousavi, issued a firm warning on Monday, declaring that the United States’ recent actions have crossed a red line.

Iran fired a salvo of missiles and drones on Monday at Israel while also warning the United States that its military has been given a “free hand” to attack American targets in the wake of the Trump administration’s massive strikes on Iranian nuclear sites.

Israel said its defense systems were operating to intercept the threat, apparently targeting north and central areas, and told people to head to shelters.

#Pakistan is now the world's fastest growing solar installer in terms share of total energy.

25.3% grid energy from solar alone!

And its entirely a grassroots phenomenon, with NO government financial support beyond free trade on solar.

We now get more than a quarter of our electricity from solar, more than Europe at 7%, US at 8%, even more than China at 11%.

In less than two years!

Israeli media has been limited in detailing the specifics of recent attacks on targets within Israel due to military censorship. For instance, most outlets didn't mention that Tel Aviv University was the target of a strike yesterday, which damaged a nearby shopping area. The prominent coffee shop's signage at the site was cropped or not included in the images published, even though they circulated widely on social media.

This morning's message states only the following:

"Israel Electric Corporation: Strategic infrastructure facility in the south was hit, disruptions in electricity supply to settlements in the area"

Instead, Israelis are shown random images of attacks on targets in Iran.

Brexit has blown a £40 billion tax hole in the public finances, according to a forecasting audit that finds that the Office for Budget Responsibility’s projections on the impact of leaving the EU have broadly materialised.

Amid escalating hostilities, Israel on Monday launched a series of coordinated airstrikes targeting multiple Iranian military airbases, intensifying an already volatile conflict between the two regional powers.

Israeli fighter jets struck six airports spread across Iran’s western, eastern, and central provinces.

According to the IDF, the strikes caused damage to aircraft, fuel infrastructure, runways, and underground bunkers.

What I fear Trump will do with his war, centralize even more power and curtail even more civil liberties

@rbreich :"Trump wants to be a war president. Everything he has done to date has been aimed at concentrating power in his hands and undermining democratic institutions, which are far easier to do as a war president."
