Do you post in more than one language?
Mastodon's web interface now automatically detects which language you are posting in and suggests switching to it in the posting language indicator.
For example, if you have your posting language set to English but you start writing in French, the language indicator notices this and starts glowing yellow. Also, French appears at the top of its language list.

Yeah, this highlights the drawbacks of a detection system! The developers mentioned in the Github discussions that it's difficult to reliably detect languages 100% of the time, especially when posts are very short.
The new system seems like a good compromise, it automatically suggests changing it but doesn't automatically change it.
In the end the human posting will know best which language they are actually using, but it's useful to be prodded about it sometimes 🙂

It's only very recently (a matter of weeks, not months or years) since Scots gained official recognition as a language in Scotland, despite the fact that a fifth of the population speak or understand it.

in reply to Daniel Nawu • • •The language check runs on your server, there isn't any kind of centralised service being used. Your typing isn't being sent anywhere.
Also there is nothing in the Mastodon admin interface that lets admins see any info about this. You can check with your own server's admin about this.

L'interface web de Mastodon détecte désormais automatiquement la langue dans laquelle vous écrivez et vous propose de passer à cette langue dans l'indicateur de langue d'écriture.
Par exemple, si votre langue de rédaction est l'anglais mais que vous commencez à écrire en français, l'indicateur de langue s'en aperçoit et commence à s'illuminer en jaune. De plus, le français apparaît en haut de la liste des langues.
