Although the Labour party is denying that its fiscal management amounts to austerity, many of us detect the same logic that drove much of the previous Tory govt's fiscal actions;
the problem is that austerity is a false economy, often failing to bring even the benefits it claims & making public services worse for everyone.
It may not be news but we *do* need to remind ourselves regularly that austerity is a key cause of the UK's current problems

Certainly, there is an argument this would be a better strategy!
Yes, its an interesting dilemma; the business model does usually have (as you say) a three/five year exit strategy at its centre, but equally they are also (because of their risk appetite) often able to take much longer shots than other forms of support for innovative businesses.
My feeling is reforming the VC sector (with the help of some 'enlightened' VCs) might make sense.... or at least more sense than kowtowing to financial services
