You know those grey ‘pencraft’ boxes that represent text before it loads, because loading text over HyperText is *so* onerous?
Well, if you turn JavaScript off (or it doesn’t load) that’s **all there is** of your writing on Substack.
They took an API for text developed in 1989, and have burned $90 million to serially disable it, with $100 million promised to them to burn it some more
…The mechanics of just how Substack have used $90 million USD, so far, to ignore #webDev best practice are so shit as to be quite funny.
A Substack ‘post’ initially delivers 5 nested levels of .pencraft `<div>`s, the second level of which has `cursor: pointer` assigned to it, which means that when JavaScript doesn’t run (kryogenix.org/code/browser/eve…) you can stare at 4 rounded rectangles and a circle that visually advertise themselves as a link but have no content and don’t link anywhere at all.

Gaza: almeno otto morti mentre i carri armati israeliani entrano a Deir Al-Balah

The image depicts a serene lakeside scene. In the foreground, there is a sandy beach with visible footprints and shadows cast by nearby trees. The sand is light-colored, with a slightly uneven texture. The middle ground features a calm lake with gentle ripples, reflecting the clear blue sky above. A small dock extends into the water, with a person standing on it, adding a sense of scale to the scene. In the background, a line of trees marks the opposite shore, and the sky is mostly clear with a few scattered clouds. The overall atmosphere is peaceful and inviting, with the natural elements harmoniously arranged.

Newgrange and Knowth were mind-blowing and incredibly well done. Google maps may be trustworthy in finding you the shortest route, but definitely not the least nerve-wracking route, finally ensconced in a strange estate guest house in Partry, Mayo, on the west of the country.

Then drove through Cong to northern edge of Conamara: through the Maam Valley to Leenaum and Killary Fjord, bog fun!, then drove the Doolough Valley (most Iceland-looking place I’ve seen here) to Louisburg. Full-family dinner in Westport. Rest of the family opted for less driving and more beach time.

in reply to T. J. Bombadil • • •Ireland 🇮🇪 Day 5 addendum: Sheep. I grew up on a sheep farm, so I’m no stranger to our woolly friends. But Achill Island (and Conamara too) are astonishingly full of sheep. Most are color-coded (by owner?) and entirely free-range. They have no fear of humans or cars and are often seen lounging near or in the narrow roads. Tufts of multi-colored wool can be found all over the place scraped off on bushes or blown by the wind.

Explored charming tourist trap Cong in the morning, then a spontaneous wander-and-lunch in music-filled Galway (where they were having a festival and I successfully drove through a parking garage), then the long drive east to Navan, Co Meath.
