Talia Hibbert has great disability, sexuality, and just generally nice diverse representation in her romance novels. Some genuinely laugh out loud moments too. @actuallyautistic

I like Dinosaur and Nina seems to me a pretty well rounded example of autistic representation. The first season of Austin was good too in the way it plays either autistic stereotypes. I liked Out of My Mind too. For documentaries, Crip Camp, Makayla’s Voice, Inside Our Autistic Minds (haven’t seen the ADHD version yet), and Deaf President Now! are great. The film Audrey is also interesting but darkly funny - I love Hannah Diviney’s work.

I'm currently reading "Where You See Yourself" by Claire Forrest; the main character has cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair; it's #OwnVoices and so far doesn't seem to be veering too much into inspiration porn or tragedy. Feels like teen romance is the base genre; it's a novel; no queer element as day as I've read so far.
"Navigating With You" by Jeremy Whitley was excellent IMO, and includes queer romance along with a disabled main character. It's a graphic novel.
I also liked "To a Darker Shore" by Leanne Schwartz, although there's a spectrum of views on whether autism is or is not a disability. I had some minor quibbles with the mythology-level politics, but they aren't terrible IMO, and I felt like it mostly avoided being inspiration porn by humanizing the main character, despite the fact that she does play a heroic role. It's a fantasy novel.
I'm not disabled or queer myself so my recs could be off.

I have honestly not seen any characters that really humanize PTSD, other than veteran stuff which seems to...IDK..almost romanticize and celebrate it. I'm not a veteran, but still have PTSD, and there really are no great characters to draw from :(
@praetor The most recent books in Brandon Sanderson’s Stormlight series deal with PTSD. It makes me wonder why more authors haven’t done this. Of course heroes who have to battle evil & save the world would have PTSD!
@praetor One thing I like about this series is how much real-life mental health stuff is woven into it. Trauma response! Autism! Dissociation! Lots of characters I can relate to & see my friends in.
@praetor @superflippy agreed about how its portrayed and ignored. the superhero trope is frequently that someone is traumatized in order to gain superpowers (and then motivates them). talk about a toxic way of setting aside the actual experiences people with PTSD.
I actually think the show House does a pretty good job with humanizing chronic pain based disability, and even though its not explicitly PTSD, theres a lot of overlap with pain and trauma.
911 has a disabled kid who is treated respectfully on the show and isn't treated as a prop (though I've not seen every episode, so I may be mistaken on that last part). While the show gets some things wrong, every time that kid is on screen, it makes for a better scene.
The coroner in the original CSI is disabled, but it's literally never part of the plot. If it's ever mentioned at all, it's brief, in passing, and relevant to the conversation at hand. To add to this, the first 2-3 seasons of the show deal with Grissom's hearing loss as well as some of his more autistic traits. Sadly, after either season 3 or 4 (whenever he grew the beard), they dropped a lot of his more autistic traits to make the character more likable to general audiences and they gave him surgery to drop the deaf angle. I disagreed with that decision, as he was the lead character at the time and I felt that was doing a disservice.

If you can ignore that Ricky Gervais is an intelligent but unusually transphobic twat, Derek is a good show on Netflix. Some of the characters are caricatures and thus exaggerated, but I believe the character of Derek was a solid example of a low to moderate intelligence high wisdom type of autistic person just living a fairly normal life. I quite enjoyed Derek stimming with his lobster claws, and occasionally do it myself because it is rather satisfying. Gervais truly studied the mannerisms of some autistic folks to act appropriately and realistically. His portrayal of Derek, IMO, is one of the more realistic representations of a reasonably self-sufficient adult autistic person.
As a character, Derek was among one of the best characters on the show (both in terms of morality and reasonable representation), whereas the awful characters were there to show how accepting and loving Derek is while being a good influence on them and making them better people.
It's a weird faux reality show which I feel does well to represent the middle-aged autistic experience, but there is plenty of low-brow humor from the more obnoxious characters.

I like Fringe for having multiple disabled characters that I think are well explored.
Walter Bishop has (self-imposed) neurological damage, the details of which take a long time to come out, but I think the presentation is thoughtful, and the depiction of his son as a (reluctant but dedicated) carer is wonderful.
Nina Sharp has a prosthetic arm and while it doesn't stop her being a powerful business woman, it is neither ignored nor overemphasised.

Walter when we meet him is mostly sweet and somewhat lovable in his often confused state, but the narrative does not take this to absolve him of the errors of his past, and you can see that the darker aspects of his personality still exist. It's a thoughtful and complex performance.
The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells do, to my mind, a great job on depression, anxiety, and PTSD, as well as fantastic lgbtq+ rep, including a non-binary main character, polyamory as normal, and a variety of neopronouns that are just respected without comment. Great critique of capitalism, too.

John Wiswell is a disabled author and disability activist. He write Someone You Can Build a Nest In. The main character uses bones to shore up her rather boneless self--John says they're like prosthetics. Cozy horror. Machine by Elizabeth Bear has a protagonist with chronic pain despite the far future tech. I just never see that in science fiction.
Mary Robinette Kowal's Lady Astronaut books have several characters who struggle with chronic illnesses, physical and mental. There are queer characters as well. (disability and queerness are both plot points, so no spoilers beyond that they exist). The first book in the series is The Calculating Stars. Her book The Spare Man, which is also in space but not the same universe as the other series, features a disabled protagonist with a service dog.
Adrian Tchaikovsky's Final Architecture trilogy has a character with mobility impairments who is an excellent engineer and has a number of self-built exoskeletons she uses for different purposes.
