Employers across the U.S. added 73,000 jobs in July, a slowdown from previous months and a sign the labor market is downshifting.

The unemployment rate rose to 4.2%.

MORE:

Today's jobs report shows a MAJOR SLOWDOWN in labor market since Trump announced tariffs in April.

We can now compare the first 6 months of Trump with the final 6 months of Biden, and it's no comparison.

Over a million jobs created under Biden, less than half that under Trump.

NPR - More than 1,000 rabbis and other Jewish leaders from the US and elsewhere have signed a public letter urging Israel to allow more humanitarian aid into Gaza. npr.org/2025/08/01/nx-s1-54869…
in reply to Steve Herman

not stop committing genocide and land grab. No. Let some aid in so we don't have to face any consequences.
They are speaking out because they see this may hurt them.
This is the opposite of morality. Shameful.

This is really bad. The job slow down obviously, but the size of the revisions is maybe more ominous in light of all the DOGE cuts to BLS and other economic reporting agencies. If this volatility is the new normal we are stapling a huge risk premium on the US economy.

And if that's in fact what's happening, you send a message to the world that you should probably hold off on making that decision to invest in USD or any other part of the US economy until you've got a longer time horizon. Taking liquidity out of the US economy is a massively stupid idea.
in reply to Sean Casten

And yet - like Trump's tariff policies - it is what happens when you put stupid people in charge of US economic policy. They cannot be fired soon enough. /fin

Airdrops are at least 100 times more costly than trucks.

Trucks carry twice as much aid as planes.

If there is political will to allow airdrops – which are highly costly, insufficient & inefficient, there should be similar political will to open the road crossings.

As the people of Gaza are starving to death, the only way to respond to the famine is to flood Gaza with assistance.

There is not political will to feed the people they’ve been complicit in starving. There is however the political will to engage in performative actions to give the impression there is political will to feed people.

The end goal is to allow the entity to complete its genocide while also pointing at the air drops and say “we did our best”.

It’s theatre.

It’s Not Broken. It’s Working As Designed.

I saw the clip of Kamala Harris telling Stephen Colbert that she chose not to run for Governor of California because "the system is broken." And while I understand the sentiment, this language continues to feed one of the most persistent and dangerous myths we have:

That what we’re dealing with is a malfunction.

in reply to Kim Crayton ~ Her/She

That these systems, institutions, and policies were meant to protect justice, equality, and the greater good but somewhere along the way, things just fell apart.

Let me be clear:
Our systems are not broken.
They are doing exactly what they were designed to do.
And until more people are willing to sit with that uncomfortable truth, we will keep wasting our most limited and precious resources:
Time.
Energy.
Money.
Hope.

Trying to fix what’s already working for those it was built to serve.

in reply to Kim Crayton ~ Her/She

If we continue to operate from the false belief that reform is possible within the existing framework, we’ll keep investing in “fixes” that maintain the status quo. We’ll keep treating systemic harm like a bug instead of a feature.
We’ll keep assuming democracy is fragile only because it’s under threat when in reality, it’s always been conditional. Always been partial. Always been exclusive.

And that’s why the work of dismantling and reimagining must start from a place of truth:

in reply to Kim Crayton ~ Her/She

This house was built on the foundation of exclusion, exploitation, and control.
It has been reinforced with every policy that prioritizes profit over people, every institution that centers whiteness and patriarchy, and every system that punishes the most vulnerable for not playing by rules they were never meant to survive.

So the real question isn’t “How do we fix it?”

in reply to Kim Crayton ~ Her/She

It’s: What will we build instead?
Because the future we deserve won’t come from patching the cracks in a system designed to collapse on top of us.
It’ll come from creating something entirely new.

in reply to Kim Crayton ~ Her/She

As my profile says we are seeing modernity die in front of us. We need to hospice it as Vanessa Andriotti puts it.

If we try to "fix it" or "replace it" without awareness given the trauma, whiteness and psychological and spiritual colonisation which has taken place over the last 400 or so years, we are probably going to repeat history.

We need to sit & learn from whatever happens next. As Vanessa puts we need to put all our shit together and compost, let nature do its thing &...

in reply to Kim Crayton ~ Her/She

@angiebaby
The US systems aren’t inherently broken, they just have really big loopholes that no one is interested in closing.

Gerrymandering, the Electoral College, and now the blind acceptance of Illegal Executive Orders. There are safeguards that everyone is just ignoring!
