But what if you support the team where you're from, and the team where you live? Setting up an account for each club would work, but what if you also want to banter about your sport with friends and family who support other teams?

Like a "federation" of independent fan clubs. Each service has refs who know the members of their club, and have their trust to make fair calls.
Both members and whole clubs can silence the message of anyone, from any club, who keeps making trouble. They can even silence a whole club, if its refs don't keep its members from making an arse of themselves.

in reply to Strypey • • •So far, so good. You can use one social club membership to talk to other fans across a whole sport. But what if you follow more than one sport? What if you follow a dozen sports? Do you set up and manage a dozen digital memberships?
Now imagine that there was a similar digital social club for supporters of every team across all sports, and they can all exchange messages with each other. So you can use one membership to talk to other fans about any sport.

So now imagine that there are similar digital social clubs for every kind of shared interest. But you only need to join one to talk about sports, music, crafts and cooking.
That's the fediverse.
