I've been hearing a lot of disappointing, but not exactly shocking things about what's going on over there.
Moderation is hard. And that's for a server with a few 100 people who mostly agree on the Big Things.
Moderating a "platform" kind of means having a whole process, and not commenting on things like this. It's really unprofessional.

@futurebird They don’t want to be moderators. Never have. They want to build a platform that allows others to provide moderation-as-a-service.
The problem isn’t with their views on moderation, even though their take is terrible. The problem is how Jay interacts with people when they are mad or upset about an issue on the platform. She shitposts on them.

@ramsey
OK, but if you are "in charge" you shouldn't speak about any kind of pending moderation controversy about any people that you respect.
Which is why this is so obnoxious. I think we kind of agree now that I read your post again.
And "moderation as a service" sounds ... I hate it.
I want to participate in a community where anyone who has power respects people like me ... and my friends.
They could have just been silent.

Agreed on the rest, but…
Mastodon is also a kind of "moderation as a service", in that when I buy into a server, I buy into its moderation policies, and have to shop around for one whose policies I like. Worse, because of the server I'm on, the policies of *other* servers affects me when they do things at a server level (as I've experienced)—so I have to consider all the pairwise policies too. It's no more fun.
