In Mediocre: The Dangerous Legacy of White Male America, Ijeoma Oluo recounts a chilling quote from a Southern politician in the early 1900s responding to the exodus of Black Southerners fleeing violence and exploitation:
“Politically speaking, there are far too many negroes, but from an industrial standpoint there is room for many more.”
That statement might feel like a relic of another era, but if you sit with it, you’ll realize how little has changed.
This has always been the blueprint of the myth of white supremacy: to criminalize and suppress Black political power while simultaneously exploiting Black labor and cultural contributions.
The formula has simply mutated:
✔️ voter suppression laws,
✔️ gerrymandering,
✔️ attacks on DEI,
✔️ mass incarceration,
✔️ and economic policies that keep Black communities trapped in cycles of extraction while still demanding our labor, creativity, and resilience.
And here we are again.
Today, in the midst of the chaotic nature of this administration, white folx are demanding that we end our rest and abandon efforts focused on our own survival to once again prioritize you.
Once again, the expectation is that Black folx, particularly the 92% who consistently vote for justice, equity, and survival, will step in to save whiteness from the consequences of the choices y’all made.
Nothing has changed.
The demand is the same:
➡️ suffer in silence,
➡️ build our economy,
➡️ fuel our movements,
➡️ fix our politics…just don’t dare center your own freedom, rest, or joy while doing it.
But here’s the truth, our work has always been about liberation, not saving whiteness from itself.
Our survival is not your safety net.
And our rest is resistance…because without it, there is no future beyond the myth of white supremacy.
