Rockbox is slick, I used it on cheap mp3 players back in the day. My iPod died a bit before they added support for it (wasn’t the drive, that could have been fixed).

yes! I have had in on my iPod classic for about 14 years! My favorite interface is the one that mimics a black and yellow tape player. Play pause ff rw switches even appear to toggle on and off. But sadly haven't used it in years, just a jellyfin (finamp) / qobuz listener now with Bluetooth headphones and everything :-)
