@static My guess is the scope is grounding internally and being "more clever" than we actually want it to be. Schools tend to use old CRT scopes for good reason, this is a posh new one I actually got for calibrating sig-gens etc, rather than student use.
@static We also replaced our old scopes recently. As expected the ground of the measuring channels is connected internally. However, what is not in the manual is that the shielding of the HDMI output is also connected to this ground. So when we use a monitor we cannot choose the reference point anymore... Not a big problem, but something to be aware of
Yeah, my guess too, internal earth. Modern scopes are sometimes to clever for their own (or the operators...) good! I may need to Read The Fine Manual better ;)
I can't fully remember but I think the resistance is sometimes dependent on the probe. So with that one being a basic pass through just not a high enough one.
Even old scopes connect their ground to PE (I once melted insulation on a breadboard jumper by connecting scope ground to +5V from a lab PSU that also grounds negative side of its output.)

And potentially just enough resistance provided by the scope to "complete" the circuit?
