@markwyner I don't use Johnny Decimal precisely, but I do use double digit prefixed directories for stuff I want to see in a particular place. Examples include "00_Archive" or "01_3rdparty". Media have their own scheme, based on publishing year or series order, etc, which I align with the creator's chosen method of ordering.

I find that serves me well enough that a strict number based system tends to be overkill.

Documents get prefixed with the date stamp in YYYYMMDD. Anything less is...

I find that Johnny Decimal has a similar issue as numbering lines in source code: you kinda want to leave gaps for inserting related things. But how large should they be? Do you need triple or quadruple digit prefixes?

I may be a tad too concerned with grouping related things.

I have a 10.19 Life admin directory.
Then, I have 20.29 projects one.

But you could have 20.20 project A, 30.39 project B, if pour projects are huge. Each subdir then can have 99 subdirectories. Plenty of space to put your files.

I don't have many projects in parallel, but they have all the same subdirectories. That way I know where each file goes.

I've read that book, but I prefer #zettelkasten for my markdown notes that I keep in a dedicated git repo.

JD is used for all other files.

In my notes I usually have a link to another note (the idea in Zk is to connect notes) and sometimes a link to a directory in my JD to find some documents like a PDF, jpeg or something else.

I didn't say - and don't think - there's an overall system better than the other. That's why I use several ^^ This discussion made me realize that I've been way too brief in an old blogpost I wrote about my file system management approach and I will work on a new post :)

To keep it short (and thus incomplete here), I'd say that - based on others' deep comparisons of several systems and my specific use-case - JD is less flexible when projects are in flux. For example, you could map PARA to JD categories with 10-19 for Projects, 20-29 for Areas... But you might need to renumber or reorganize often as projects start/finish. Experience will definitely vary with the type of projects you are dealing with. Nonetheless, JD is better for organizing stable resources.

Although I don’t strictly follow either system, I’ve adapted their core concepts to fit my workflow. To summarize roughly, PARA sets my general structure and JD helps with the micro structure and to prevent PARA folders becoming big messy directories.
