presumably run by the sort of Americans who claim to be Scottish because their grandmother's window-cleaner's dog's previous owner's brother once flew over Scotland on the way to somewhere else.

It is cool how a simple pattern turns into a marker of identity and history, not just clothing. What is interesting is that tartan today reads as style again, even though it originally worked almost like a social code.

Today is #MonkeyDay so here’s my Sun Wukong the Monkey King, hero of Chinese folklore (and throughout Asia) as well as the 16th century novel by Wu Cheng’en, ‘Journey to the West’.

Before embarking on his humorous epic adventure (and ultimately helping to recover Buddhist sutras) this irrepressible character was born from a stone, becomes a King of monkeys, acquires immortality through 🧵

Well I assume #mastodon is pretty much dead in Japan?
Or is that only a personal feeling when I compare #Japanese activity on Mastodon vs. X and Instagram?
in reply to Ryo

I always thought Mastodon was huge in Japan? Isn't the biggest instance a Japanese one?
in reply to Kev Quirk

I thought so too, but there is almost no federated stuff... maybe there is a problem like i have with another server. It seems federated but nothing comes through. Strange...
Basically my feed is almost without any japanese postings despite I follow many topics from Japan.

RE: aus.social/@KathyReid/11571761…

I had to look up what this was about. There was a terrible hate crime, a shooting in Australia on the first day of Hanukkah.

These hate movements have been normalized too much.

i'm a lot happier going with "terrorism" and not "hate" on this one. the shooters were firing opportunistically at unarmed people, eventually walking around trying to find, and shooting, new targets. this is a lot worse than hate.
in reply to Paul McO'Smith III

@pavsmith

I feel like the word "terrorism" has become meaningless sometimes. And it seems to be a "thought stopping word" --

But I also agree with you. The purpose of hate crimes is terror. To tell people they don't belong and eliminate them as equal participants in society.

Which is exactly what all of these Nazis have been saying over and over without push-back from enough people ... while some are just silent and others invite them over for dinner.

in reply to myrmepropagandist

it was the hunting aspect of this one. they started walking around looking for, and shooting, new targets. call it what we will; it was evil.
in reply to myrmepropagandist

and it's now US policy to encourage these groups both in the US and other countries.

Piece on the recent findings at Çatalhöyük, showing matrilocality and greater tendency of grave goods in female infant burials:
'female babies and children were five times as likely to be favored with grave goods as their male counterparts'

Radical Anthropology reshared this.

'The team’s analysis also showed that people buried in a given house tended to be related along the maternal line, suggesting that women remained connected to their homes while men moved away to join their partners’ households.'
