- Khan's reign in the 1990s
- The early 21st century post-nuclear horror
- The #Irish reunification of 2024 😄
If I were to write futuristic fiction that incorporated current-day events (time travel plot or whatever), I would make sure that all human history for the first century after current day were wiped due to some (natural/technological/war) cataclysm so that there's no near-history to compare to as the franchise ages. XD

I guess it could, if the imminence of the threat of societal decay were important, which I guess it was.
But projecting a near (bad) future is different from recalling a near bad future from much further away (23rd-25th century, as in Star Trek)
